Alchemist Shops

Postby drathe » March 6th, 2009, 10:45 pm

At what point do you introduce the Alchemist Shop(s)?

Traditionally, I introduce them when the Heroes begin the Quest Pack each Alchemist Shop comes with. I was thinking of possibly shaking things up a bit and introducing them early. But this would either overwhelm new Heroes, and also leave nothing new later on. Does anyone else have them available before the Heroes reach the expansions? Any Pros or Cons to doing so?

I, too, have been debating this topic. My original thought was to introduce them as the QP were started and only make them available to the Heroes while they were involved in that particular pack. Once the Heroes went on to the next pack, the old Alchemist Shop items were no longer available, but the new ones were.

I really had a hard time with that, as later on (say in a brand new QP after EQP) the Heroes should become infected by a werewolf! Well, that didn't sit well with me.

Then, I thought, just make them available from that point forward. I liked this idea, in that it continually added items that the Heroes could spend gold on.

However, as I worked on my advancement system, I included the Alchemist Shop as a 'reward' for advancement. I'm still going to build forward with availability of potions.

It's also good to keep in mind that some Quests/Quest Packs don't make the Alchemist's Shop available (continuous Quests).

My thought is also, that in future 'new' Quest Packs to simply add a random table that Zargon/Morcar can roll against to find out what potions/weapons/armor are available between each Quest. Just a thought... or two... :)

Yeah, I always had the shops available from the relative quest pack forward. I never took them away.

This is an interesting idea, which also sparked a new thought of random treasure. Good treasure. In room 'A' when a hero searches for treasure, Zargon rolls one (or two) red dice. The treasure the hero finds will correspond to a chart matching the die roll. Could have each number be a different treasure, or say, 1-3 is a more common treasure (all the same) 4-5 is a uncommon treasure and 6 is a rare/valuable treasure.

I think that AHQ did something similar insofar as their treasure tables.
