More solid color (Haslab 2022) vs. painted (Renegade retail 2024-2025)...

And more comparison picks between Avalon Hill's Haslab (2022) in solid color vs. pre-painted Renegade Game Studios (2024-2025 retail):...

More comparisons, see above...

The plants correspond to the ones with the Haslab set...

I didn't see this last promo figure for separate retail sale yet (might be released later?). In an email I see it was available with certain orders at least for a limited time. Hopefully like the other promo figures they offer it for sale in a later run!

The Kryie Warriors were concept art on the 2022 Haslab pages, but as you can see they've been sculpted and fully painted now for retail...

Once again a reminder that the "unit color" plastic for the Haslab campaign hasn't been used in the retail versions... you either pay a higher price ($10-20 more for the smaller boxes, $100 more for the master set) for the pre-painted "premium" versions (marked with gold stickers on the front and different text on the back, otherwise all boxes are identical). The "unpainted" versions are white plastic, covered in a gray wash. The "promo" figures are all pre-painted, there's no unpainted version of these.

The terrain packs are mostly pre-painted (the foliage pack I have isn't painted, but uses multi-colored plastic instead).

I just want to say thank to you OG co-creator of HeroScape, Craig Van Ness, who autographed my Sgt. Drake Alexander figure last year at GenCon!

New 2025 characters not found in the Haslab campaign (that I could see), from Renegade...

They've also released 9 "free bonus scenarios" in digital format (PDF) from their page.

An example of the "unpainted" retail versions... here's also the painting kit (it's just Army Painter):

They're selling spare parts, with obvious appeal to those who already own the game or wanted replacement parts, or maybe didn't want to buy the master set but expand anyway...

I've heard that the water tiles from the old sets were particularly fragile so that's good news for old fans too, that they can get more of these separately if desired. The sparkly "wellspring water" might be new for the re-release, I'm not sure.

Keep in mind all of these figures are "new" from the perspective of the 2004 classic HeroScape. The only things that are the same are the terrain tiles, which are fully compatible between versions, the combat dice (based on the second master set design that has white dice with red skulls and blue shields) and the design of the counters, markers, gyphs, and stat cards.

The new "Age of Annihilation" figures have integrated bases and the plastic and scale is very similar to Avalon Hill's other miniature games (HeroQuest, Betrayal 3rd edition, Talisman 5th edition).

Between the new master set and the first battle box, you'd get a lot of terrain.

Finally here are some new terrain packs. I feel like I've seen pictures of snow and lava terrain from the original game (obviously just different colors but same sculpts as regular terrain) but these were not advertised for the Haslab campaign, plus there are some new terrain components included with these.

The swamp set is obviously just a set of land, water, and foliage in different colors, but again, not part of Haslab, and I'm not sure were part of classic (but any true HeroScapers can tell me if I'm wrong on any of these details)!

Compare to the pictures of the Haslab 2022 terrain.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'm sure Hasbro is getting their money's worth from the failed Haslab campaign, and then some... and that's good news for fans who wanted this, even though it will cost you about double buying these packs in retail as it would have cost you had the campaign been funded... and about 2.5 times if you buy the painted versions (but somewhat cheaper to get the paint set and do it yourself).

The demos done by Avalon Hill's Chris Nadeau and Patrick O'Rourke (with the guidance from Craig Van Ness) on youtube utilized 3d printed (it looks like) figures that were painted in single colors to resemble the plastic minis they originally planned to put out for the Haslab campaign.

Another small difference I see between the Haslab version and the released version is that the included d20 die was white with black numbers, while the retail version is the opposite (black with white numbers). It's just a standard die so one could easily find an alternate from any FLGS if they wished it to match. ;)

I'm not quite sure what some of the little plastic chits are in the Haslab pictures. Those may or may not have their equivalents in the released versions, but I suppose those could be anything, even cut up pieces of paper. Any HeroScapers who know whether those are important, feel free to comment! |_P

See previous page for the rest of the images!

PS: There is a companion app for HeroScape... sort of. Actually there are many bits of free software for HS, but they are all fan made and unofficial, check them out here (HeroScapers, a really awesome fan site, by the way!)
