HQ (and SQ) dice distributions and chances

Postby Maurice76 » September 3rd, 2018, 1:34 pm

While reading through the advanced rules of HeroQuest Revised by slev, I noticed numerous items and quests using color-coded dice. I learned that they're of German make, by a small supplier. I like them, for it gives all sorts of possibilities and variations with different outcomes ingame. What was missing for me, however, was a proper way to evaluate the various dice between themselves and how one die color would increase or decrease overall power of the outcome of the roll. To that end, I decided to write some macro code in Microsoft Excel, which would do that for me.

HQ and SQ dice chances.xlsm

The "HQ and SQ dice chances" Excel sheet is a sheet that can help people determine the optimal combination of dice for whatever situation they are trying to evaluate. Users can assign up to 10 dice for either HeroQuest (including the German colored dice) or for StarQuest / Space Crusade in varying combinations. Once done, pressing the "Calculate odds!" button will then run through the permutations of the dice involved and display the chances for each specific amount of symbols to be rolled using said dice. The code executes fast, even if up to 10 different dice have been selected.

Not included in this sheet, this data can then further be used to plot in a graph or compared to the results of other dice rolls, etc ... to find the most optimal combination for a given situation.

The "Calculate odds!" button triggers some macro code and therefor it is needed to allow macro code to run, otherwise the calculations aren't possible. The macro code itself is not protected by password and can be accessed easily. People interested can therefor easily check what the code does (note that I didn't supply comments with the code - but the variables used are pretty self-explanatory); it's placed in "Module 2" under the "Modules" section of the program code.

Hopefully, this will prove to be a useful tool for people who are looking for a way to evaluate the dice rolls of whatever they're designing!

It is also relatively easy to add new custom dice to the sheet and use it in the macro code. In order to add new dice to the sheet, the steps detailed below need to be taken.

1) Open the sheet in Excel and select the "Dice" tab at the bottom.
2) The list of dice shown is labeled "Dice_Names" and covers the dropdown menu's available on the "Distribution" tab. When adding new dice, it's important to make sure it becomes a member of the "Dice_Names" nametag. You can do this by either inserting a new line between the existing ones, or by editing the nametag entry through the management interface for nametags and include the extra entry.
3) Make sure the name of the die you add starts either with "HQ" for HeroQuest dice or "SQ" for StarQuest / Space Crusade. The macro code behind the sheet uses these first two letters to determine to which game the die belongs.
4) Optional: Add some fancy color coding if you want, akin to the ones already there; it helps to set them visually apart.
5) Fill the proper columns with values for each of the 6 faces of the die in each of the 3 listed entries. Quantity matters here; for instance a double skull is shown as a 2 in the column matching that face of the die. The order in which you put them in doesn't matter: during the permutation calculations, it loops through all die faces anyway. Do make sure however to fill in a 0 for faces that don't contain any symbol of the kind.
6) The 7th column of each entry is the maximum occurence of the respective symbol on the die in question. Make sure your new die also contains this value, as the calculations use this value too. Complete this for the 3 categories for HeroQuest dice or for the 1 category of the StarQuest / Space Crusade.
7) If you've done step 2 correctly, the dropdown menu's in the "Distribution" tab should now show the die you just added. You can add conditional formatting to the dropdown menu's for your new die by simply CTRL-select them all and then opening the conditional formatting option. Examine the existing ones (note: only works for Office 2010 and higher; Office 2003 is not as extensive in this area) and copy the existing formula. Create a new one and paste the formula in it. Then assign the various formatting options as you see fit.

I think opinion is divided over the coloured dice, people either love them or hate them. I'm firmly in the hate camp being dead against adding any new dice to either HQ or SC when you can just as easily to the same thing by adding more normal dice or in the case of HQ, use black shields as something other than single monster shields. I might be in the minority though.

I just wanted to say a big belated thank you, Maurice76, for the spreadsheet! I have recently returned to HeroQuest and Space Crusade after some 28 years and have started to write my own amendment rules. I had begun to calculate the odds of certain dice combinations but, not being very mathematically minded myself, it was very slow and disheartening work. You have just saved me a lot of time! :D

I notice the German retailer now has Olive, Grey and Ivory dice variants. By following your guidelines I have been able to add these to my spreadsheet too. Awesome work!

I'm not entirely sold on coloured dice in HQ but the magpie in me is attracted to colourful things so I want to evaluate what effect the dice might have on the game before deciding whether to use them, or just ignore them and keep it simple.

Thanks for your appreciation :).

I've been contemplating making a small addition to it, sparked by a recent discussion here with respect to rerolls. It shouldn't be hard to implement it ... all I need is a bit of time to do it. Time is in short supply, however.

I may have been a bit premature about my delight at adding new dice to the spreadsheet! :bites-lip: I have come across an error of some kind when attempting to use the new coloured dice that have been released (Olive, Grey and Ivory). I've been through the instructions for adding dice and think I have carried out the steps correctly. I have also tried just altering one of the existing rows to reflect one of the new dice types with the same result, alas.

OLIVE die faces: 2xSk, Sk, Sk, Sk, 2xBS, 2xBS
http://spielwarensaloon.de/product_info.php?info=p334_olivgruene-heroquest-wuerfel.html

GREY dice faces: 2xWS, WS, WS, 2xBS, BS, BS
http://spielwarensaloon.de/product_info.php?info=p217_graue-heroquestwuerfel.html

IVORY die faces: 2xSk, 2xSk, Sk, BS, BS, BS
http://spielwarensaloon.de/product_info.php?info=p577_elfenbeinfarbige-herouest-wuerfel.html

The Olive and Ivory dice do not have any White Shields and if I roll more than one of those die, or one of those dice in combination with other dice, I get "Run-time error 9 - Subscript out of range".

The Grey dice do not have any Skulls but do not produce a VB error. However, the script is unable to display the odds of rolling more than 2 of anything (e.g. 4 Skulls) with multiple dice and just displays 0%.

No rush! I had a look at the script, thinking maybe I could spot what was causing the error and my brain nearly melted! So I very much appreciate any personal time you sacrifice to provide such a tool for the rest of us! :D

Hmm, usually I comment on the code I write, especially when I publish it - but for some reason, I seem to have forgotten to do that here. Something to fix for the next version, for sure.

Edit: I already see where the bug is. My code is counting the number of different symbols and it runs a for-loop based on the number of skulls over the array of Good Shields and Evil Shields. Easy to fix, but silly bug nonetheless.

If you want to fix it yourself, you can look for the following code snippet:

For ArrayCounter = 0 To MaxSkullOld

SkullArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueSkull) = SkullArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueSkull) + SkullArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)
GoodArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueGood) = GoodArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueGood) + GoodArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)
EvilArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueEvil) = EvilArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueEvil) + EvilArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)

Next

And replace it with:

For ArrayCounter = 0 To MaxSkullOld

SkullArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueSkull) = SkullArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueSkull) + SkullArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)

Next

For ArrayCounter = 0 To MaxGoodOld

GoodArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueGood) = GoodArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueGood) + GoodArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)

Next

For ArrayCounter = 0 To MaxEvilOld

EvilArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueEvil) = EvilArray(DiceCounter, ArrayCounter + FaceValueEvil) + EvilArray(DiceCounter - 1, ArrayCounter)

Next
