A lesson learned about Games Workshop

My last visit was amusing. I went in to buy some paint for my Memoir 44' tanks. The guy at the till in front of me was buying a whole new army. The assistant was engaged in animated conversation with him about them, saying that when he'd finished painting them he must come in and fight his Zombie army in store.

I was up next, to be greeted with an enthusiastic and friendly "What army are you painting?" "Memoir 44 tanks actually" was my my reply. End of conversation. No reply, he put his head down, gave me my change and that was it. I left the shop .

I have had similar experiences on my recent visits, just swop out "Memoir 44' tanks" with "Napoleonics" and "Heroquest".
I think next time I go in I might just come out with it and say that "I really don't care for the modern style of Games Workshop models and games, and that in fact my major hobby is rebuilding Heroquest, Space Hulk and Warhammer Fantasy battle 5th addition using old-skool figures that I get from thrift stores, ebay and games conventions. I still like your paints though "

Once, in a GW store, I was greeted with "May I help you?", said "No thanks, I'm here for price comparisons," scanned the store for 2 minutes, touching nothing, and then left wordlessly.

If you are looking to paint up figures or make custom modifications, this is a good place to start.

Not a chance in hell, they lost my business permanently. Main reason because the person at the counter was one of the hecklers. Super poor customer service.

Your experience at my local store would have been different. And shame on GW for not training and re-training employees in how to be inclusive. But there are stores out there who do it right. The generalization does not help anyone who is not going to your store.

My primary issue with GW moving forward is that I'm not interested in the new scale (it''s not a scale issue, those guys are supposed to be 9 feet tall!). Example: The Silver Tower barbarian would be pretty cool in HQ, but he''s a giant! 1 in 40 new models is something I like, and that is a lot of models. Unfortunately AoS is not viable moving forward.
