"Although we love the idea of it being harder for certain characters do do things, say the wizard jumping a trap, don't forget adding in dexterity etc, is playing with the careful balance i mentioned in the other thread. Especially how it's the weaker character more likely to fall in. The loss of 1bp to the Wizard can be fatal."

Absolutely. I played the Wizard for a long time & rarely if ever tried to jump a pit trap anyway. It wasn't worth the risk since I could just waste a couple noncombat turns & climb in n out of it. Thankfully today ppl have come up with grappling hooks, rope bridges etc.

Yeah you can't do that in the original but if you have Rope, a much welcomed mod, as featured HERE... My Armoury, it can be done.

I added Climb as a Bonus Action. Bonus Actions require the sacrifice/discard of 1Md6.

The beauty of HQ stats is this:
The probability that the Wizard will die faster from traps is represented in his fewer BP. That's all there is to it.

mitchiemasha- Just looked up the old rules & you are correct that I shouldn't have been able to let players climb down & back out without a rope, so I will put that in my game.

Also since I lowered the Dwarf/Elf & Wizards Dexterity( jump) rolls, I will have to either invent a rule that hero's can assist you in a jump, use a rope or simply cheat & allow players to roll like normal(Skull) for just pit traps. I'll have to see.

"You really are new if you've not seen these!"

Oh crap you're right lol! I haven't seen those for either decades or purhaps never! Never used em either. Now i know what you're talking about for the different ratios/odds they offer.
If I get my hands on em I would have no problem making a better system. But damn that blows my mind that they got TWO shields or TWO skulls on just one side. I dont know what to think about that. Ill read up on it thank you.

One thing I noticed you all sorta like is to sacrifice some movement for an action/partial action.

I'd love to hear more about this if you got the time.

Actually, I think that's just me. Most play it that vanilla they don't require it but i figured it was the best way to have everything work.

Think about these.
If you have plate armour, you only roll 1Md6. To do some actions now this character can't move, you're not using that rope to climb or net.
If you use a net, standard attack on a monster, 1Cd6, which unlocks drag, sacrifice 1Md6 to drag. Now the character dragging a monster can only move 1d6, thematic perfection. Catching a Goblin and putting it on the rack is a requirement of 1 of the quests i have in the making. Yes, you torture a Goblin.

There's many reasons to why everything locks together with 1 simple mod. "Bonus Action: Sacrifice a rolled Md6!"

When it comes to skills the Md6 has to be under the Mind value. So no need for rerolls slowing down the game. Everything is visible from the original steps in the game. like SNEAK. A sneaking hero sacrifices 1 Md6 lower than it's Mind to sneak. Now it can only move 1d6, obviously because the hero is sneaking, moving slowly. The reason why it's lower, A high roll would be an excited hero (and, it works better mathematically).

Same for rage related traits like Werewolf and Berserker.

It all interlinks with out extra complications and bloat. Lot's of complexity hidden under the hood, but at the table, it flows.

In Character Creation you can give your Hero Bonus Actions, -1 Md6 to do in game.
Giant Strength: Exchange Squares
Standfast: +1Cd6, ideal for those sturdy Dwarfs
Slip: Move between 2 diagonally occupied squares, you know MIGITS!!!

Then there's standard Bonus Actions, -1 Md6 to do in game.
Re-Equip: Change equipped weapons/armour.
Give/Receive: Weapon/potion to/from another whilst passing or adjacent. Both may Re-Equip for free.
Climb: Table/chair/ladder. Table is 2 squares, giving a larger area to attack, be attacked, opponent -1Cd6.

Taking a potion that you own is still free. And because... it's the original rules.

mitchiemasha wrote:If you want to add a test of strength. This could be roll Combat d6 equal to current Body points. If the test was to overpower a monster, the hero would need to roll skulls greater than the monsters Body, Defence or Body + Defence, playtesting would show which is best.

Ah yes!I used that system for a long time & STILL LIKE IT since your strength relies on your BPs.

I like these a lot & will keep them, Thank you.

Damn, I am not making my self clear.
If latter on I wanted a hand 2 hand fighting system, I can not think of anything simpler than using a single combat die to decide it.

The Barbarian rolls a SINGLE Skull to punch & rolls a SINGLE Skull to dodge an enemy punch.
A Goblin rolls a SINGLE BSkull to punch & a SINGLE WShield to dodge. Meaning the Goblin is gonna die real quick against the Barb.

The Wizard rolls a BShield to punch & a WShield to dodge. Meaning the Goblin & Skeleton hits & dodges EQUAL to the Wizard at the beginning of the game. I think this is appropriate since the Wizard shouldn't be fist fighting much in the begining of the game at all.

Only a SINGLE combat die is rolled for both Hero's & monsters when attacking or defending. This way the Barbarian can whip the hell out of a Goblin, or be somewhat evenly matched against a Gargoyle, which i think is fine.

One Combat die should be fine when handling hand 2 hand combat. At least that's my hope:) admittedly never play tested though.

Hell, I could lower the enemy stats & say a Goblin must roll a BShield to punch & a BShield to dodge, which would mean our Wizard could actually fist fight most Goblins or Skeletons & win on avarage:)

I'm down for lowering the enemy stats if it makes things run smoother.

But don't forget.....one Combat Die is all that is rolled for att or def, That's gotta be the least complicated thing ever.

I don't know exactly what these stats would be used for (presumably brawl if for when they don't have a weapon?) because I haven't read the other topics you mention but it's not the mechanic itself that's complicated, it's that you're adding new mechanics rather than expanding existing ones which makes the game as a whole more complex. Shouldn't the elf's dexterity be the highest, succeed on a skull?

That's fine, I just need to figure where I fit into this whole thing.

I can only speak for myself, but my impression is that the people on this site are mainly the hardcore Heroquesters. Still going for almost 3 decades. They have each evolved the game to suit their tastes. This is exactly what I have done. I come here to give my ideas and to read other peoples to see if I like them enough to incorporate them into my games. The quests people publish are an amazing resource, but again I often warp them to suit me.

If your ideas are not to someones liking, then so be it. You like them, you shared them, and someone might use them. I think we are all on our own little trajectories. This is just HQ grand central where we can all touch base. This is all just my opinion you understand 8-) .
