drathe, the last of these posts was 5 years ago, but do you still live in the Niagara region? I am in Niagara County on the US side, so other than border time, I would love to figure an HQ meetup some time. I love to play, but am a huge rule stickler. I only ever play by official content and I would like to try something outside of that. What rule mods make it more fun? How can you combine features to get the most out of a game? That type of thing.

Yes. Still here. 20 mins from Queenston-Lewiston bridge. 30 mins from Rainbow Bridge.
Not much time for quests as of late. Hoping things slow down in the fall and I can get some quests in.

With my most recent group, we've added a few homebrew rules.
1. Tiered Armoury. More advanced weapons and armour become available over the course of the GS. Heroes don't become too powerful too soon this way. Same goes for the Alchemist's shop. More advanced potions are introduced for each quest pack. I've also taken 75% off the price of the potions. I've found throughout the last two decades that they are too expensive for what they do. Heroes don't bother purchasing them. Now that they are much cheaper, they spend their gold on them and use them frequently. Which is the whole purpose for the potions being in the game.
2. Chests can be opened without an action, like doors. Heroes must be standing in front of them. Heroes are more apt to risk traps to get the goodies before their fellows. Also makes some of the pit and spear traps around chests more relevant.
3. Wizard gains more spells over the course of the GS. Currently we just use duplicates of the original spells. One day I may instead use totally new spells to expand the spells instead of duplicates of the originals. Wizard also gets all four elements, instead of choosing three.
4. Barbarian starts with the short sword. All other heroes start with daggers. This made the short swords in the armoury relevant for purchasing. The broadsword is introduced later in the tiered armoury.

I think that's about it. Just simple changes that make the game feel more progressive, and make certain elements more relevant.

Can you post your tiered armory? Let us know what gets allowed when and such.
And the new prices for things...I know you said you changed the price for potions. Anything else?

Thanks

I only changed the price of the potions. The original thread about it is here: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=249&hilit=tiered
I'm pretty sure the final version is different than what's listed in the first post there. I remember their being a 5th level introducing the crossbow. I'll have to check my game materials and files on my hard-drive to find the PDFs I created and used.

drathe, does the rule of the Wizard getting all the spells and the Elf not getting them really work out well? Do you use Elf spells?

I have extra decks of spells and the elf can still choose a single set.

I like this approach.
Last few games we played I gave the Elf the entire deck of Elf spells and the Wizard got all the Elemental spells.
The elf barely touched their spell pile. Couldn't find use for them... Give me those spells...just watch me!
But one must play to their players and not the game, so I think I will dig out the spare deck of spells and try your approach.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Yeah, I think I am going to make 3 new Elf spells and use drathe's rule.
