Do you tell if a Gargoyles is in stoneform?

The monsters, and Grin's map actually, are most easily found by exceptionally bored people who have nothing better to do than look for random links hidden in extremely old posts. According to drathe, the easiest one to find is the Zombie.

That was the one I wanted most, so after I figured out what to do with the Zombie, I went for him next. He's not all that difficult to find if you look for him.

I think it is kind of fun to have a player break a sword or something when trying to attack a stone figure.

Plus, it makes the idea of a gargoyle more interesting and fantasy focused. The reality is that you don't know if it is real or a statue.

I always say if it is made of stone. I figure that it should be pretty easy to tell an inanimate piece of stone from a living breathing monster, even if it is trying to stand really still. Remember, even though our gargoyle model is all grey, like a stone statue, a live gargoyle would look very different, teeth, armour, skin colours etc.

In the early days, my brother would try all sorts against a stone gargoyle. He now just shrugs and says "Ah well, it will come alive at some point when I do something. Open that chest or that door." He then just gets on with the quest and basically ignores it until it does come alive.
