Suitable figures

Postby Tomkat364 » July 30th, 2014, 1:21 pm

I'm a more recent fan of HeroQuest, having been introduced a year ago by some friends. Terrific game, and I was lucky enough to find a complete copy of the game for sale. Then I found out about the expansions...
They're next to impossible to find, and any copies available are worth more than the original game.
Has anyone found any figures that are a.) reasonably cheap and b.) suitable replacements for the figures from the expansions?
I had already gotten some Reaper Bones figures to outfit my wife with female versions of the main characters, but even finding skeletons/zombies/mummies for the Witch King expansion is next to impossible.
Suggestions???

Reaper makes skel/zom/mum as well, and I heard of someone making recasts on this forum

Reaper makes a decent skeleton warrior, but in my opinion their zombies are not very detailed and look horrific. I'm normally against the concept of stsacer, but in situations where there is no other way to obtain items (doesn't seem like MB is going to reproduce this gem), I'm not overly zealous. any other details would be appreciated.

Funny how I first thought this must be Danish before I realized how to read it.

I have so many cool miniatures from the Reaper Bones 1 KS that I can totally use for HQ, I backed Bones 2 as well!
They have mummies, skeletons, some witch kings, orcs, goblins, lots and lots of cool heroes, evil warriors, kobolds, rats, beetles, many sorts of dungeon monsters. Can't go wrong with Bones.

I second this notion.
War is not the answer...unless the question is, 'What is not the answer?'

I don't see how anyone can dislike the concept of recasts.
You can paint minis, mod minis, but making them yourself is the real core thing, and casting is the classical approach. I would recommend to anyone in this hobby to try his hands on mold making and casting at least once.
The only problem I can see would be legal ones (but this has nothing to do with "(dis)liking" something). But for figures that are out of production and wich I need for personal use, I would have a clear conscience.
Of course, from a collector's point of view, originals are preferable, but replacement minis by reaper or another third company are even less "original".
Have a look ;)

Well, this was more my point as well. As long as the casting is good quality, I don't have a problem with the item. But from a piracy-type standpoint I try to refrain from buying recasts. But as stated, this is a situation where the copyright holder is not losing out on income because they are ignoring a market that exists, and so I wouldn't be as morally frustrated with the choice. Price is the only big issue for me at this point. Bones are cheap, and looking further they do have some better looking zombies than the first one I saw. Love their wizards and dwarves as well. Probably going that route.

Re: Suitable figures

Postby Decipher » August 11th, 2014, 2:32 pm

I purchased a huge lot of various plastic WOTC minis a year ago which contained elves, wolves, snakes, trolls, minotaurs, ogres etc. that are to scale for around 20 bucks. I havent played any of the official expansions that I have yet but I would just substitute what I could with what I have on hand that doesnt change the essence of the expansion. We just make up our own HQ quests now a days more than stick to the quest books. Thats why I love HQ so much, it is a simple game with streamlined rules that cover just about anything you can throw in it like borrowed minis or furniture.
