Jaws' HQ project, Image heavy.

Postby Jaws » December 22nd, 2013, 10:03 pm

I figured I might as well start a thread here. I have been restoring my old game to it's old glory.
Replacing all the miniatures with new versions, and reprinting some cards that had gone with the wind, so to speak.

All in the hopes that I can brainwash the new generation, which includes my brother's kids and my own little twins when the time comes.

It had been lying in storage for like.. 18 years. But it was the first game I played, and the first miniatures I tried to paint. So I hope our kids will like it just as much as I did once upon a time.
The original miniatures were all there, with a few defects, but they are so bland compared to today's standards, so I decided to buy everything new. Should be easy, right? Surely just 28mm warhammer army stuff from GW would do?

No.. It was not that easy. Warhammer armies have changed over the last 10 years..

The original goal:

31 Monsters:

8 Orcs
6 Goblins
3 Fimir
4 Chaos Warriors
1 Warlock
1 Gargoyle
4 Skeletons
2 Zombies
2 Mummies

I also decided to get miniatures for the different special characters in the quest books.

Then I would need 4 heroes. I decided to go large and get 8. One of each sex for each class. More fun for the wives to join.

The results are here:

Heroes:

I went through a lot of barbarians to find one I liked. I think I bought.. five(?) in total.

Image

The heroes were the first minis to be painted. So my rusty technique really shows. The male elf has a face only a mother can love.. :/

Image

But I was really happy to find a nice looking female dwarf:

Image

The male mage is still missing a hand. The cats stole it during the night, and I'll have to craft him a new one when I get my hands on some putty:

Image

Monsters:

I decided to keep this fellow. He is so original, and a really cool sculpt. Even after all these years, I can't help but think he is über cool:

Image

That said, I bought another gargoyle so that I can provide some diversity:

Image

Just your standard Chaos Warrior:

Image

GW had stopped making mummies. Or at least so it seemed to me. I got these really cool fellows from Reaper miniatures:

Image

Image

Good ol' Heimrich(?) Kemmler takes over the role of random evil wizards:

Image

Due to some errors with the shipment from FW, I played around with the thought of modding and upgrading the old Fimirs:

Image

But luckily enough they came through, and delivered a set of these:

Image

Image

These old ghouls stand in as zombies:

Image
Image

I also have a few really detailed zombies from.. eh.. was it enigma miniatures maybe? Anyway, my girlfriend has my camera, so I can't get any shots of them right now.

The goblins were also hard to decide upon. Everyone seems to think they should have headgear. Preferably Mongolian? I am not one of them. Finally, I decided to go with the LOTR versions:

Image

Could not decide on the paint scheme, so I made every other goblin different:

Image

For skeletons, I had a ton of old warhammer troops lying around, and the undead Morcar himself, is a Reaper miniature:

Image

Image

Also, if you guys remember that mage with the failed experiment, I found a stand in for him as well:

Man. Awesome. Good choices in there.
I almost decided on the LotR goblins as ghouls.

Looks really good! Except the gargoyle and Fimirs, everything is still available at GW. But I guess you are not too hooked on getting a whole regiment just for 2 zombies

I really like those Forge World fimirs. It would be cool to use one as a fimir boss.

I know Warhammer Fantasy players will cringe when I say this, but I put all minis intended for Hero Quest on small square bases. I find it hard to place minis if the bases are too large.
If you are not planning to use them in both HQ and WHF I think it gives a more coherent look.
(This is before I bought actual HQ bases from Zealot Miniatures ;))

Have you ever considered Mantic's undead vs dwarves kit? They have lots of cool skeletons, zombies, ghouls and nice looking dwarves that can double as mercenaries :)
I also like the look of their orcs, but they seem to be a pain putting together.

Yes, Mantic has some great packs. I decided against buying it because I felt like I only needed a handful. So I wanted the most detailed miniatures I could find.

I will however buy their zombie mercenaries(?) conversion kit for use as Legionaries in my Mutant Chronicles game. :)

These are the mini's I settled for:

I agree about the bases, though. I'd prefer to have the same bases on all the figures, but importing things to Norway is a pain. Postage fees are terrible. I see it as a minor thing that can be remedied in the end. First I want to actually get all the miniatures I want. :)

Everything looks awesome so far, can we get a scale shot of the forge world fimir please?

I was thinking of picking them up but they are ogre sized from what I can tell.

They are indeed ogre size. And don't fit too well on the board. I do feel, however, that the looks make up for the clumsiness. :)

Here is a comparison shot with some of the models I've gotten:

Much too freakin' big. But right next to him to the left is what I'll build my Fimir out of. Sjeng knows what I'm talking about.
