I am an independent video game designer/developer. I also produced a line of miniatures, but I sold the rights for most of them to another company. I am planning on breaking into fantasy board games, soon, too. Here is my poorly-updated blog--the old stuff is class: http://secretartsgames.blogspot.com/

knightkrawler wrote:For me, the minis I own are game pieces. As long as they're not painted they are color coded to give them a unified look. That means I spray them with Army Painter primers I can live with shinig through when they are painted. You know, orcs are dark green, skaven fur brown, goblins light green, yetis light blue, undead skeleton bone...
Heroes and NPCs are grey. Men-At-Arms get a colored rim, as my four hero classes are also color coded, so that we always know which henchman belongs to which hero. Sjeng did something similar.
I like the unified look among minis of a kind that perfectly combines with the simple rule appeal of the game, which is why I want 4th edition Warhammer orcs with bows to fill my ranks and not the new ones. (But only as long as there's no better option). I won't put a new Warhammer orc in HQ and tell my players it's an Orc with the stats HQ orcs have. That's just ridiculous when you know how Orcs have changed to something bigger than HQ ogres over the Warhammer years...

I don't care for the price of Army Painter. Mix Mod Podge or white glue with some acrylic paint, and then paint straight onto the bare metal of a miniature. It will (1) feel exactly like a (heavy) plastic miniature; (2) cost you practically nothing. I just dolled up a bunch of old Dark Eye miniatures in this way. I'll get some photos up of them.

knightkrawler wrote:But I digress... The thing is: Everything I own is there to play with. Period.

I give away a lot of my stuff. I hate clutter and am naturally munificent (that'd be my virtue, by the way).

Thus far I have finished three figures, all main characters for my wife. Female Paladin (in place of barbarian), female wizard, and female elf. Working on dwarf at the moment. All of these were Reaper's bones, and I'm looking into getting expansion equivalents from Reaper as well. Originals are just too pricey.

Our family mixes and matches to be honest.

As we have 3 daughters they all wanted female heroes, so firstly I bought a female barbarian off goldenboy on ebay, then we got a few reaper bones minatures that were female.

Also we mix and match monsters, and include dark world figures, normally Ogres, Orcs, skeletons, and mummies.

I also have a few nightmare legion figures from 1986 that I bought off ebay which are basically skeletons which I like to use. I have 3 x Ennio Mordini commander figures, basically he's listed as an undead champion in the advanced heroquest instructions, as well as the musician and the Renzo Avanti figure. I used to have the nightmare legion box set years ago, I bought it off a mate but I traded it back to him later on which I now regret, though I always thought the rank and file skeletons in the set were awful but the command figures were amazing.

I also have a quite a few skaven and men at arms from advanced heroquest, together with the wizard character. Oh and 1 Skaven from the warhammer quest game that I use as the boss skaven as hes a different color. I'm probably going to buy a Black orc off the warhammer quest game also to use as my boss orc in the game.

All of Heroquest + expansions
Dragon Strike + First Quest
Dark World (base set)
Lionheart
Warhammer Quest + expansions
Advanced Heroquest + expansion
Legend of Zargon (woefully incomplete)
Bones II (and III when it's released)
Enough Warhammer Fantasy minis to cover most any bestiary.
Talisman + a bunch of hero minis from all eras.
+ Random minis to cover voids here and there.

When I recently unearthed my HeroQuest from "mom's attic," the first thing I did was get female versions of the heroes from the Reaper Bones series. Here's the breakdown, if anyone is interested:
Female Barbarian = Amiri, Iconic Female Barbarian (I love her huge freaking sword. Modded just a bit by removing her quiver of spears)
Female Dwarf = Freja Fangbreaker (The obvious, and best in my opinion, choice for a Reaper female dwarf hero)
Female Elf = Lanelle, Half-Elf Rogue (I slightly regret this one, because the base is as non-HQ as a base can get; she is standing on two levels, one foot higher than the other. I have considered putting my Reapers on HQ bases, and this one might be difficult. But, my girlfriend and I both get a kick out of her high ponytail)
Female Wizard: Seoni, Iconic Sorceress (I like this one because she is in a similar, but much more dynamic, pose as the HQ wizard)

I also picked up a Reaper knight, Sir Garrick the Bold, for Sir Ragnar. I like to give my players the option of using Sir Ragnar (with his stats from the Inn's "Chronicles of Sir Ragnar") if their original hero dies after about Quest 4.

Beyond that, I've been collecting proxies for the Elf Quest Pack, which include Ogres from Dark World, Elf Archers and Elf Swordsmen from Heartbreaker (one of my proudest eBay finds. True retro figures, stamped "92." They have the same "long faces" that the HQ Elfs have), and the Evil Wizard (Teraptus?) from Dragon Strike for the Archmage. I have a feeling I'll be going with Reaper's Wargs for the Giant Wolves, but I haven't picked them up yet. I also have other Dark World and Dragon Strike figures, but haven't given them all a proxy assignment. I'm thinking Dragon Strike's Bugbears might be good for the Barbarian Quest Pack's Polar Warbears...

Cool collection.

I'm using GW 40k Fenrisian Wolves for my giant wolves. I bought cavalry bases for them and the one I have assembled (but not painted) looks great.
