I use a spray simply named "Farvefjerner" (color remover) from Sadolin. It's a Danish brand, so I realize most here won't ever even see it.
I put the minis in a cup and spray all over them. The spray is liquid, but quickly turn into thick foam, covering the minis completely.
For metal you can just leave them for a couple of hours if you want. But for plastic I tried having some turn light and soft like Decipher described.
The trick is the timing. I found that if I pick them up again after 5-6 minutes the paint peels right off but the plastic is still unharmed.

I'm too chicken to paint mine.

I don't paint mine. I don't really see much reason for it, and I like minimalism. I also feel like painted miniatures make it even harder for a miniature to represent something other than what it's supposed to be -- it's easier to accept an unpainted chaos warrior as a menacing statue than one that's been fully painted to resemble a living creature.

Anyway paint costs money and I probably spent a lot to get the miniatures in the first place.

You are telling me you haven't bought extra minis to paint up as statues?
Son, you disappoint me...

But really, the game plays the same whether the minis are painted or not.
I do however think it adds to the experience that the minis are painted.
But to each his own :)

:D
Even I, Sir Doesnotpaint, bought four Chaos Warriors from BattleMasters in order to paint them up as statues.

Oh... So you didn't also paint up four fireball shooting orc statues? I thought everyone did...

(Is there really such thing as a Hero Quest snob?!)
