Odds of Damage

I've been trying to create new spells for the Heroes, and as I went along I wanted to find a way to rank them based on potential damage. So I've been looking at the various ways of rolling the dice. It took some multi-colored charts, and lots of math and algebra, but I think I've come up with some good information. These charts show odds of damage done against defenders with Black Shields and defenders with White Shields based on how many attack dice and defend dice are being rolled. I don't know if this would be useful to anyone, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I've also done a chart for when you defend with Skulls, like when defending against Chaos Sorcerers' Mind Spells in Against the Ogre Horde. I just haven't finished the calculations for 6AD and 6DD. I'll try adding it over the weekend.

As you can see, I rounded up to the nearest percent most of the time. If you think it would be better to only round up to the tenth of a percent, I can edit this.

I'm in favor of results including a 10th of a percent. I also think it would be worthwhile to add a column of probablilities for 0 Defend Dice, because some spells, such as the Elf spell Deep Sleep, don't allow any defense for a monster. Should more columns be added for 7, 8, or even more Defend Dice? A Barbarian wearing Borin's Armor, a Helmet, and carrying a Shield has 6 Defed Dice; if a Potion of Defense and Potion of Frost Skin were drunk and 2 Rock Skin spells were cast using the Spell Ring or a spell and a spell scroll, then 12 Defend Dice could be thrown. The same goes for Attack Dice. Just with the Game System, a Hero with a Battle Axe who had a Courage spell cast on him and drinks a Potion of Strength can throw 8 Attack Dice. With doubling of attacks from a Potion of Heroism the 4 Attack Dice from the Battle Axe could even be doubled again for a total of 12 Attack Dice (if the BQP single defense rule is used). Okay, I'm getting carried away. Still, I think expanding the table could have uses if you want to bother. Perhaps 8 Attack Dice and 8 Defend Dice would be enough, as that would account for 1 magical bump.

I also included two example tables for black shields with the results expressed for chances of each damage result rather than at least X dmg. I figure it's easy enough to calculate at least X dmg results from them by simply summing. I also extrapolated a few results to demonstrate an expanded range. What do you think?

Algebra will help me get larger dice rolls, I just didn't want to attempt it if people thought this was kinda stupid.

Tenth of a percent won't be hard either. I can totally do that right away.

I chose to show "at least" damage instead of "exact" damage because I figured that's how people would like to read the information. You're absolutely right though. Determining "at least 1 damage" is adding up the chance of doing "exactly 1 damage" plus the chance of doing "exactly 2 damage" plus the chance of doing "exactly 3 damage," etc. (Or 100% - the chance of doing no damage.) Therefore, the chance of doing "at least 2 damage" is the sum of doing "exactly 2 damage" plus the chance of doing "exactly 3 damage," etc.

I have separate tables for spells that can be defended by rolls of 5 or 6 on red dice, or spells that are "indefensible" (in other words, 0 defend dice). I can definitely add a column for 0 defend dice, I just hadn't put it together.

Should I edit the first post, or add this new stuff in subsequent posts?

Let me get that "Defending With Skulls" table inserted and work more on the 7 and 8 attack and defend dice rows and columns.

I don't mind the 8 AD and DD. It doesn't happen too often, but every once in a while a Hero or Monster will have that kind of boost. And I like the expansion to a tenth of a percent. That's fine with me. Hopefully I'll get to the expanded White Shield and Skull tables today (or tomorrow).

As for the tables, I've noticed that I can't scroll within coded text when I'm viewing the forum on my phone. It's slightly frustrating. I'll probably stick with keeping the coded tables smaller and adding a header bar halfway through.
