to paint or not to paint

I recently re-acquired a pristine never-been-played copy of HeroQuest after foolishly trading my collection away many years ago. Even the box is in awesome shape. I've recently gotten back into board gaming, and have started painting mini's for games that include them. I just started painting about a year ago, but after painting mini's for several other games I feel like my skills are to the point where my paintjobs are pretty nice looking.

When I was looking for a HQ set online, I had full intentions on painting everything for it. However, now that I have it in front of me I'm hesitant. I guess my memories are from playing the game unpainted, and it might lose some of that nostalgia value for me. Also, if this game continues to become collectible, a paint job might decrease the value somewhat (not that I'd ever get rid of this game now!!)

What do ya'll think I should do? Has anyone painted up a recently acquired copy, or dug out their own copy from childhood and painted it up?

Not that it means anything but ppl who don't paint their sets? I look at them like they're crazy.
The only reason not to poiant yor set is cos yor skillz sux. So then you should HIRE someone skilled to PAINT em!

Call me crazy if you want, but I prefer my miniatures unpainted. I like my HeroQuest stuff to look original and unmodified. I certainly admire the fine and skillful painting I've see on this website, but when I'm shopping for games with miniatures like HeroQuest, other people's paint jobs are an absolute turn off.

I recently sold a few copies of HeroQuest on eBay and the set with unpainted miniatures sold for twice what the painted set went for. The paint jobs were a mixed bag though.

I absolutely would if:
1) I had any talent in that realm (I dont ) and,
2) I was willing to devote the time

I saw a copy on eBay not too long ago with beautifully painted figures and wanted it so bad, but it was way too expensive.

Also, I REALLY want a 3D board like I saw on this one dude's site (he even made brand new furniture in the style of the original but fully 3D and painted. I wish I was rich and could just hire him to make me a copy and hire someone to paint my figures. Oh well.

I see how you feel, and if you like them unpainted, leave them this way. They are your's and must fit your taste, no one else's. Many people make a fuss of painting, but it is not, and never has been, obligatory. Personally, I only started to paint minis a year or so ago and it will take still some time to complete my warhammer army before I start to even consider painting HQ minis. But, thinking about it, I probably also will leave one set in original state for old times' sake, but then again, I have enough spare minis to paint.

Thanks for the input everyone. I do feel like my painting skills are up to par, it's just the nostalgia factor that's holding me back. I'm probably going to just play the game unpainted for a while, since I'm in the middle of painting up my entire Descent collection. After that's done, I'll revisit HQ and see about painted that as well. I'm sure by that time the renewed "newness" of the game will wear off and I'll be ready to dive in and paint those greenskins.
