Re: 25th Anniversary Edition HeroQuest Petition

Postby Daedalus » December 27th, 2012, 7:03 am

My post at Old Scratch:

I'm repeating a post idea from the Inne.  There's a member at Boardgamegeek using a petition website to try and get Hasbro (or whoever) to take notice and re-release Hero Quest.  https://www.change.org/petitions/bring-25th-anniversary-heroquest-edition-to-market  Yeah, it's a longshot, but the more Hero Quest fansite members that support it, the more possible it becomes.  If European sites can be added in by threads like this one, the potential increases further.  If you post on an EU site and are willing to risk some cred, feel free to help out.

A lot more signitures are needed to reach the 2,500 [edit] goal.  Currently 314, last I checked.  It isn't a whole lot, but should five or six HQ sites join together, that number should noticably improve.  If the signatures tripled, maybe there'd be enough faith for the lurkers to get involved, kind of like a Kickstarter generating more interest as it grows.  We can even make up our own stretch-goal rewards for [fun. -edit] Or not.  I'd leave that up to the more [creative minds -edit] here if someone were to be so inclined.

Pipe dream?  Probably.  But if you're willing to take a hit for the game (I got one thank-you notice in my email), perhaps some momemtum can be gained.  You can adjust their ability to notify you, as you can also set your privacy setting to public or private.  What you are surrendering is your name, city, and state if you don't uncheck the box for displaying your signature publically when you sign.  The petition guy still gets it, regardless of unchecking the box (a petition with no signatures is worthless).  Be warned that if you display your info publicly by not unchecking the box, third parties may access your information at the site.

The suits needs to take notice and believe a market exists.  Hasbro has re-released games in the past, and they recently bowed to a petition and changed one of their toy colors.  The games-design heads have said maybe it can happen--they'd be happy with some version of a re-release if management approved, but nothing is currently planned.  (I believe it was Skyknight that knew them and asked a couple of years back--hope that's right.)  We need to give management something to think about by coordinating an adequate request.

If you are willing to govern the privacy issue and take a chance for the game, maybe something can be gained here.  Personally, I'd like to see reasonably-priced expansions again.  Who knows, maybe even the Wizard Quest Pack and Dwarf Quest Pack can see the light of day.  All right, I'm just dreamin' now--but isn't that chance worth five minutes of following the link?

I understood that there's a question of split ownership that needs to be PAID OFF by any party that would produce the game again - therefore it won't be happening because it's too prohibitively expensive.

Never say never. But it could be nice to have some facts on the table:
Who exactly owns what?
What would the cost be to start production?
If there really is a marked for reprinting HQ, maybe a kickstarter or something like that could actually make it happen...

There will be a reprint one day for sure, the question is “when?”

As we have seen with other examples it will have the same quests, maybe some changes on the rules (I hope not), the same or more expansions, less plastics, more tokens, and a modern type of miniatures.

Let’s hope that games workshop will take part on this (this will happen only if fantasy flight will buy the licenses from Hasbro to do the reprint), or else Hasbro will do the reprint with miniatures like those from ad&d (legend of drizzt) which is not the best.

Fantasy flight is a company with a great activity lately, and they are not afraid to make cooperations with others, as they did with Games Workshop for the WH 40k rpg. Also the Talisman, which was Games Workshop’s game, was a perfect reprint from fantasy flight, even better than the original. Let’s pray to do the same for HQ.

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, are more for card games and this is not good. Even for ad&d they put cards... I am afraid that if they ever republish heroquest, they’ll do changes with cards for skills and event cards as the legend of drizzt, dungeon command, etc. Their only reprint they ever made (I am not 100% sure for that) was the “dungeon!” boardgame, very recently (two months before). And this means that they are starting to see profit on the idea of old games republishing. But as I told I am not sure if I should be happy for that. The truth is that the “dungeon!” reprint was almost perfect, showing respect to the original rules, but with no plastic miniatures (!!!), of course the value is very low (20 euro!) and that’s a good reason (they all have miniatures for the basic type of heroes fighter, wizards, thief, etc)...

I thought Castle Ravenloft was too card heavy. There were so many of those suckers in play, each one modifying a die roll, movement or an action, that it was a pain to keep track of. One of the great things about our beloved HQ is the right mix of cards and dice to keep things moving.

I sure hope the rulebook won't be just a re-print. I think we can all agree the rules could use a tightening-up!

The only rule that truly lacked clarity for me was this one:

"If you are a spellcaster with a Healing Spell, and you have not already performed an action on your turn, you can be healed by casting the spell on yourself."

Daedalus explained this to my satisfaction in another thread, but if the game were reprinted this rule could use some clarifcation, perhaps via a FAQ addendum.

Most of the other rules I see added and tweaked are designed to make the game more "realistic" and a bit closer to a full-fledged RPG with expanded options and character advancement. The ease with which HQ can be customized is one of the great things about it, but I don't think the original rules were unclear, just oversimplified in some areas.

I think many threads in here confirm that the rules are somewhat unclear in several places.

Well, I'd still rather see this addressed in a separate FAQ rather than a complete rulebook revision. Of course, I don't really think we'll see a reprint, so it's a moot point.
