Onan wrote:With all the recent discussions here about AHQ I wonder if I had missed a gem back then. It looked like a cheap HQ rip-off on the shelves. It was called Herr des Schwertes (lord of the sword) in Germany, which also sounded cheesy compared to HQ. So I did't bother buying it. But finally I have played my first solo round, and I think I was doing it wrong.

The rules say that I can play the normal HQ quests with AHQ rules ("Heroquest Revisited"), so I tried the Sir Ragnar quest. The rules are not very clear about how to mix HQ and AHQ rules:

You can play any of the Heroquest adventures using the Advanced Heroquest rules. Replace the Heroquest rules for movement, combat and magic with the Advanced Heroquest rules. Use the Heroquest rules for placing monsters, searching, treasure cards and so on.

Sounds like whoever put the game you found (Herr des Schwretes ) together is a big fan of the HeroQuest family of games. Adapting HeroQuest adventures as quoted above would mean:
- players rotate turns as Leader of the party, but each player still moves his own pieces
- rolling for surprise to see if monsters or players go first in combat
- GM chooses for all monsters Attack then Move, or Move then Attack. Not pick individually
- Advanced HeroQuest magic system is built on using components to cast spells rather than single use card...so not much difference

With exception of when the Monsters surprise the players I'd say this would make the HeroQuest campaign easier for the players.

If you prefer different rules for combat/exploration/etc then go with your rules instead. Everyone on this forum will probably have a different opinion on what is best and worst about HeroQuest, Advanced HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest. Veteran and new Players/GMs alike frequently make up their own houserules.

Play the way you and your friends enjoy!

I hadn't even started here, but now that you bring it up... No, seriously, I wholeheartedly agree, though none of that has been in dispute.

I mean, some people even say it’s about channeling a spirit…as crazy as that may sound. ;)

Just to clarify, I believe we sometimes forget what a wonderful tool these boards are; they let us exchange opinions and experiences about games almost in real time, which could help current and future users too. I respect the advice, but I’d suggest experimenting with different approaches rather than sticking to one’s ideas.

I understand your point, but personally, reading what other players have to say about games I like has made me look at things from different perspectives, to the point that my opinions, preferences, and what I thought I enjoyed have sometimes shifted as a result. For example, 14 years ago I’d have killed for the info now in these threads; it would have saved me a lot of time and effort!

Actually, when Onan was talking about "Herr des Schwertes" (Lord of the Sword), it was a reference to the official German version of the British Games Workshop's Advanced Heroquest. Advanced Heroquest wasn't distributed in partnership with Milton Bradley in Germany like the English version; Klee Spiele published the game in Germany under the title Herr des Schwertes.

Therefore, they had to alter the box cover artwork – for example, the Barbarian's head on the action scene for the German version. Plus, Games Workshop also removed any references to MB HeroQuest in the German translation of the Advanced Heroquest rulebook (Herr des Schwertes Regelbuch).

Games Workshop explicitly registers and writes the title Advanced Heroquest with a lowercase "q" across all historical UK copyright indicators.

Sarcasm: Out, out, accursed man-things! Life is but a fleeting moment – Thanquol is eternal! /Sarcasm

Thank you for the clarification. Is it the same game otherwise?
