Expendable Mind&BodyPoints

Postby burglekutt » January 14th, 2023, 11:11 pm

Wanting to implement expendable Mind & Body points for my Heros & would love some insight.
I figure I'd make a small "bar/point" area under the Body & Mind attributes or just use "Tokens".
This needs to be a short list so I can print them on the back of the character template & i dont want playrrs having to memorize to much. These do not count as actions & most of them are retroactive.

STAMINA(body)points can be used for:
1# Reroll your melee Attack or Defense.
2# Don't roll a Skull to dodge Hazards.
3# Gain plus +4 to Movement.
4# Reroll jumping a Pitt.
5# Trade or reload a equipment instantly.
6# ?

FOCUS(mind) points can be used for:
1# Reroll MindPoints to resist spells.
2# Reroll to disarm Trap
3# You feign & enemy rerolls his attack.
4# Gain plus +2Att to a thrown weapon.
5# Live one more round on willpower alone.
6# PRAY & give one of your BP's to another Hero?
7# ?

Many of us tried to find ways to show how restful or troublesome things went for our Heros between quests with stuff like starting with one less Body Point or one less AttDie for the first room you enter, but that is way to depressing.

Instead have travel exhaustion time (-3 Stamina to start) until you buy Camping Supplies(-2 to start), rent a Pack Mule(-1 to start), rent a Horse (full Stamina).
Or negative-1Stamina to start because you were in a bar fight last night.
Negative -1Focus to start since you didn't have fun with the hooker at the tavern:D

The Wizard will feel cool concocting 1or 2pt Stamina or Focus potions at the ALCHEMISTS BENCH for the Hero's to share. Roll 1D6:
1,2= Healing.
3,4= Stamina.
5,6= Focus.
Then roll MindPoints & each :whiteshield: is the doses of the potion. wizard & Elf get a try at this.

1pt or 2pt Potions could occasionally be found throughout each Quest.

Would love to see the EW spells & poisons be broadened to do damage to these.

If any of you were to use this idea , what would you change?

Im familiar with AHQ "Fate Tokens" but I'm looking for a wider list of ways your Body or Mind may assist you as a Hero.

I know some of these could be "Action Cards" or Feat Cards, but there should be some basic things all our Heros can do if they're wise enough, prudent enough to use these points sparingly.

FOCUS - Something for "missile weapons" seems appropriate & #3 Feigning is good Defense ability for low BodyPoint heros.

Give me some pointers on this please!

I would have no more than three different actions per character, although each character can have a different set that makes sense with their class. Too many options makes it harder for new players and slows the game down a lot when people try to decide which to use. I'd also want to combine them into a single resource rather than separate mind and body. You already keep track of a lot of things in the game, it gets a bit unwieldy as you add more.

This kind of thing makes for a good bonus layer to add to the game, and could lend quite well to an advancement system beyond the "buy stuff" system already in place.

I can compact the list a bit:

STAMINA:
#1 Reroll your melee Attack or Defense.
#2 Don't roll a :skull: to dodge Traps, Hazards.
#3 Gain plus +4 to Movement.
#4 Trade or reload equipment instantly.

FOCUS:
#1 Reroll to resist magic/ Disarm Trap.
#2 Move Action Move (MAM).
#3 You "feign" & enemy rerolls his attack.
#4 Gain plus +2 automatic :skull: damage with a missile weapon.

I want these to be universal to all Heros, but I get what you're saying & could use that latter for class specific actions, that's cool!

Yeah Tokens would be easier. Barbarian gets 8(red) Stamina & 2(yellow) Focus Tokens to start.

The Talisman of Lore could give the hero two Focus points per quest instead of giving you a free MindPoint.

It's ultimately your ruleset and those are just my opinions, so just try it out and see how it goes in an actual game. I think it looks pretty promising for adding depth and meaningful decisions for a game that is often too light and simple.
