I have alway had Heroquest and Advanced Heroquest. It made it easy since the Advanced Heroquest Random Dungeon generator comes not only with solo rules, but also
rules for using the traditional heroquest board.

Today the best way to play solo is probably to use the mobile app, honestly. But the AHQ rules work well too.

The App is of course limited to what quests they have chosen to include which currently entails the remake editions of GS, KK, ROTWL and two of the three "bonus" quests (Forsaken Tunnels of Xor Xel and New Beginnings). If you want to do it with others use one of the other methods. If you're playing these quests, this method is free, so long as you have an android or iphone/ipad device (I don't, and emulation doesn't work properly on my pc).

The solo methods readily available tend to be random quests rather than existing ones... otherwise if you want to play other quests, it means the heroes will have a knowledge of the quest maps being played.

I've downloaded several analog solo methods that I have yet to try. I've played with the companion app quite a bit and find it to be a very convenient (if not most robust) way to play. To get more game-time in, I've set-up a card holder with all the necessary card decks to draw from, and installed the Gameloop emulator on my desktop PC to have a huge screen to use with the app. I track everything on character sheets and get in a room or two during breaks from work. Yes, I'm missing out on the joy of playing with the minis and the board - but that's what weekends are for :) The small footprint of the App/Card setup is very appealing too.
