Getting enough minis to play the expansions…

Postby iKarith » March 24th, 2021, 11:03 am

Okay, freakin' recipe website time. Feel free to skip.

In 2010-2011 or so, I came across HQ forums searching for something else actually. I never owned a copy, but I'd played it a couple of times and had a blast. I decided I wanted a copy. Of course, complete copies in good condition cost too much even then.

But y'know, I'd had a rough time. A really rough time. I'd been recently discriminated out of a career (they conspired via email—one of 'em was dumb enough to accidentally post the every email with my name in it to a public folder where the whole department could, and did, read the details…) and then one month after my 32nd birthday, literally to the day, I found out I had cancer. I'd later learn it was metastatic melanoma—stage 4, 30/70 odds of survival after five years.

So I went looking for a copy of the game I loved, but never had. And the prices … were too high for a complete copy in good shape. Best I could do was a copy missing some components with a couple of scrunched doors, a split-cornered box, a couple of the boards and doors beginning to split into layers at the edges. It cost me $90 plus shipping. I paid it, and did some reading about how one properly repairs/restores the cardboard bits.

Tacky PVA glue can be used to repair split game box corners almost better than new if you've got two good surfaces to apply glue to, a good corner form (an L bracket), some clips, and patience to line it all up carefully. I did that. The result is good enough I don't think you'd ever know if I didn't show you the tear lines. The fraying cardboard got hit with a good bit of clear nail polish and clamped flat. I hit the other card edge with the same stuff to seal and protect them. This you might notice, if you looked at the edges of the cardboard, because they have that laquered look to them, but again, if I didn't tell you to look, you'd never know.

Two more eBays provided the missing parts and I had a complete copy of HeroQuest in pretty good shape, with some preventative care. A couple years later, I wound up having to move, had even less space, and my copy of the game ended up at my fiancée's parent's place, along with my copy of Mice and Mystics and a copy of AHQ and the AHQ paint set I got basically unused for a song! Didn't really ever get any use out of the AHQ stuff either—the paints were dry as a bone the day I bought them, but I knew they would be. It remains basically unused because … it's a different game, entirely.

As much as I loved HeroQuest the few games I got to play as a kid, it honestly has a much deeper meaning as an adult. And … I'm still here to revisit it. Stopped the chemo in 2019—although that was a mistake, I had a new tumor last January. Back on it, which sucks because it has side effects I've had to get used to all over again. It'll be six months before they fade if experience is worth anything. *shrug*

And 2020 just sucked otherwise in general, naturally. Up to and including finding out that Hasbro was going to reprint HeroQuest—AFTER the crowdfunding ended and I was locked out of any exclusives. I don't know how I'd have justified it to my fiancée in the middle of 2020 … but I would have found a way.

GETTING TO THE POINT

I have the original 35 minis. With all the quest packs, if you had them all, you'd have an army of minis more than three times that. And while I'd have found the way somehow to drop $150 on the Hasbro Pulse thing even in the middle of 2020 if I had the option, I can't drop more than that on Kellar's Keep alone. The expansions are unobtanium.

So: New "old" minis to fill out what I have, or a whole new set of minis and I build a nice shelf display for the classic collectable ones?

I know there are fan models for e.g. Ulag and Rogar and others—but are there fan-made models of basic skeletons, orcs, etc as well that'd fit right next to the originals? How about the figs unique to the expansion? If these all exist, for the cost of printing, amd I better off placing a large order with Reaper? I missed the window for their latest Kickstarter, dammit, that could've gone a long way toward making that prospect cheaper with the right option additions.

The other option for the originals is casts/prints of the originals. Copyright-wise that's a nono. It's also Hasbro's and GW's problem. Again, if the quality is good, they're not misrepresented as being what they aren't or stealing someone else's work, and they're offered at a fair price, it's Hasbro's and GW's problem, not mine. (Admittedly, I don't know what a fair price would. I know what Zealot minis sell for and they're 3D prints.)

The other option I guess is hope Hasbro prints all the expansion packs. If Hasbro produces HQ stuff, I'm buying it all. And that'll continue right about until they start producing quest packs that don't look like they've even been playtested once with cardboard standees instead of figures or something dumb like that. This is Hasbro we're talking about here.

No really, though, I mean it: It doesn't matter what they do to the rules or the lore. The new base game is going to come with a 25mm board—something the game has always needed in many people's opinion. It'll have a whole (base) pack of minis in the D&D style, which means any Hasbro D&D minis you want to use will fit right in. And … and what? They're not (yet) trying to take away Phoenix's remakes. If they do … they'll discover that they can't. ;) If they publish expansions beyond the crowdfunding, so much the better. It means I'll have those parts too. If their new stuff is sanitized BS to avoid offending people who're never going to play the game or whatever (apparently that's a problem for D&D right now), we'll just homebrew stuff like we always have here.

I mean, the budget isn't quite unlimited here (especially if I'm building a mini army this spring before they release anything in the fall), but if they're aiming for anything in the neighborhood of $100 for the base game and $50 for two expansions, I'm there for all of them.

Until last week, I didn't know Zealot existed—I've been so out of this stuff.I find myself wishing I had a printer now. I suspect I could print literally everything I could ever want at this point. Might not be the cheapest way to get minis, particularly since I'd need to factor in the cost of the printer. Still, that means that there's options out there I don't know about.

So … any of you in my position, what would you do about moar minis right now?

If you really want to match perfectly, then yes, get a resin 3D printer for $200 and download everything HQ related from thingiverse. With $40 of resin you could print everything you need 5 times over.

Sorry to hear about what happened... life can be really rough sometimes.

To cut right to the chase about your question:

Kellar's Keep gives you enough minis to play any of the quests it has, but so does having two game systems.
Return of the Witch Lord on the other hand has double again the number of undead figures than come in the GS, but its the only pack that requires that many undead figures. The other expansions all have enough for you to use, assuming you already have the GS (duh). Anything else is just what one person defines as "enough."

I filled out a whole set of expansions (other than the first two) for a family member, using Reaper Bones miniatures. It cost a lot to get all of those (and paint them) but was still cheaper than buying the originals off Ebay these days (or a few years back as it was).

Link to a post where there are many links to 3d printable HQ files here

Many of the HeroQuest releases share miniatures.

As for tallies of shared minis, he's right, the 3d print stuff pretty much is everywhere. You'll have to use some kind of custom for the Orc Bard, Warlock and Druid from the Remake if you're trying to use classic style. I used HeroForge, but their print costs are super high compared to if you have your own 3d printer (or have a friend who has one!).
Just buy the STL file for $7 and then go from there.

Kellar's Keep just doubled the number of greenskins from the Game System, right down to the Orc with the notched sword. 3 Fimirs, 8 Orcs, 6 goblins.

Return of the Witch Lord gave more than double the original Undeads. 8 Skeletons, 4 mummies, 4 zombies.

There were 12 red Mercs included in Advanced Quest edition of the Game System (UK Exclusive). They are only used in the Dark Company 4 part super quest. And 24 weapons I believe.

Wizards of Morcar (EU exclusive) had 12 red Mercs identical to the above, if I recall correctly.

Against the Ogre Horde had 4 red Ogre Warriors (and the three unique dark blue Ogre variants).

Elf Quest Pack had four Ogres, which are the same mould as the Ogre Warrior above, but in dark blue.

Barbarian Quest Pack had five gray versions of the Mercs (they are called Men at Arms in the EU packs, they're called Mercenaries here). 15 weapons?

The remake has the following unlocks (which only people with the Mythic Tier will get):

2 extra skeletons with sword/shield & armor
2 extra hammer orcs
2 extra goblins with wolverine claws
2 extra female zombies with kukri knives
2 extra female fimirs with no weapons
2 female mummies
1 extra female "Dread Sorcerer" (Chaos Warlock substitute)
Pledge drive exclusives:
Sir Ragnar with torch and beard
"Mentor" with beard and book
Witch Lord with staff and crown

The Pulse website gives four extra Heroes even to those who pledged the Heroic Tier. So in total those people get eight heroes, just two of each, male and female.
In classic Hero Quest of course, there were only ever a female barbarian and female elf, for those quest packs respectively (US exclusive). In the world of 3d printing, really cool looking female heroes have been released out there for free for all the heroes.

If you just want the classic characters with a different weapon in their hand or sometimes a helmet or shield, those exist too on the various STL 3d print file sites. If you search the forums here you'll find tons of links. 3D Printing is the cheapest way to go with all these.

But for the Remake you don't NEED the unlocks. I don't have any proof that the "new quests" will require these unlocked characters (they could do that, since everybody who got them got the unlocks) but KK & ROTWL already have enough minis to play any of the GS/KK/ROTWL quests.

The other quest packs only assume you have the Game System, so they usually don't present a problem unless in the quest you are running from room to room not killing monsters, in which case you may be a few short now and then (use monster of the same color or similar strength instead).

I think the Dark Company technically uses one more treasure chest and one more weapons rack, which you can only get if you had two sets (or found the spares on ebay).

Decide for yourself if its worth it to get the exact right color of plastic or just paint them to look pretty much the same. Realize that the level of detail on printed minis is going to not be exactly as good as the real thing. If you want to go super close then paying top dollar for cast plastic is the way to go, and that's going to be harder to do and take longer.

But whether you just want a "classic" equivalent of each character in the Remake, or a cool looking substitute for a miniature in an expansion that you can't find or afford... those exist. They all will cost you money but you decide what's worth it to you.

Since Gargoyles are so rarely used in HQ, you could take a page out of the PC Game version and just use a Gargoyle for so many of those one off special monsters. You have the Gargoyle and the Chaos Warlock which can serve that purpose easily enough. Of course we all think it's cool if you have the perfect mini for every situation. But again, decide how you want to spend your time/money.

3d printable HQ files link again

I hope you do get to see all those things and play them, I wish you the best, and I mean that.

For the remake, I think I could probably find whatever I needed from D&D's existing minis. They won't be "the" set those who pledged got, but … each of the four heroes has a female equivalent in D&D, for example. And Mentor's the classic wizard/sage with a long beard and a book. Two copies of the new game system will give me probably a fair bit of the minis I'll need. The rest I'd just need to hit the D&D catalog if I can't get them otherwise.

In the meantime … unfortunately I don't have access to a printer. But I was expecting my startup cost to get a resin printer to be $300+ for the printer and then more for an ultrasonic cleaner (which admittedly I would use otherwise if I had it) and ideally a curing lamp because I live in Oregon where we get sun two days a year, and direct sun only for a couple hours a day where I live.

But apparently I'm reading you don't technically need the ultrasonic cleaner, it's just nice to have. And while I would want a UV cure lamp, the ghetto solution of an egg timer and box with a solar turntable and a UV lamp in it will do the trick for under $50. If that's all I need, then okay. It seems that the goal to avoid wasting resin is to print as large of batches as your printer will take and when your print is done, if you've got more, start it while you are washing and curing what you've got.

New stuff seems to be water-washable, but stuff like clear colors need 95% IPA The stuff I've commonly got on hand is 91%. If I want to print color, add pigments. Just a couple drops and stir it all in.

Yeah, I think I can do this. Need to take a few weeks to work out the budgetary stuff, but okay.

Basically ROTWL will need all your skeletons in the last quest (possibly the second to the last).

ATOH is only 7 quests and WOM is only 5. You could easily use substitutes for many of those characters. Is a map using only greenskins plus the special monsters? Then use undeads or gray figures for the specials. Is it an undead map? Then use greenskins for the specials.

So for the final ROTWL battle, you could throw greenskins in there to fill out the ranks of the undead that you lack. Sure, it doesn't look as cool/perfect, but there you go. But if you're wanting to print up extras, boom, there you go. But a few Ogres will work in multiple packs, a few Mercs will work in multiple packs.

The EQP/BQP have a ton of special monsters, but if you couldn't afford it, you can create tokens using chipboard and paper, and place them under the monsters to indicate they have different stats, for example (that's a house rule I use for elite monsters and to show which Mercs belong to which hero). Heck, cardboard standee style miniatures are part of the Brazilian HeroQuest, and that's the cheapest solution of all! (you can buy plastic pawns with little flat sides that can have stickers or drawings placed on them too).

Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun with 3d printing! Just be careful with the chemicals/fumes I hear...

I know some of the quests provide dupes. You probably don't need 18 mercs, you aren't gonna need 8 basic ogres, etc. But I have already seen quests that seem to call for two Game Systems' worth of furniture. It might be wise when Hasbro publishes the base game to plan to buy two base sets at the least. The second 25mm board can go with my original set. :P

"Ehh, what's the worst that could happen?" (Seriously, I know what some of those fumes can do, I'll definitely take some steps in that regard.)

I don't think they turn you into a plastic miniature yourself, but I'm thinking lung and brain damage (some chemicals lead to reproductive harm)... that's typically what some bad chemical fumes can do. Good ventilation or failing that a proper respirator (not all are created equal, check that it actually protects from the chemical films). You'd want to do this if you were spray painting anyway, good to take precautions with these other plastics too.

As cool as it is to have furniture in each room... I would just take the furniture out of the already explored room and place it in the newly discovered one if I ran short. Yeah it would be cool to have yet another copy of the furniture painted in a totally different way than the last one, but let's be real, unless you're using some advanced house rules (as many of us use, to be fair), most of the HQ furniture is non-functional window dressing. I guess you can say it takes up space that limits your maneuverability in battles...

It's purely window dressing, and realistically it takes up space the standard board doesn't have in abundance. But it's part of what draws people to HQ over other games which print it on the tiles or similar.
