Q10: Castle of Mystery and Artifact: Ring of Return

Postby AerynB » September 18th, 2009, 9:15 pm

So, Dave and I just finished quest 9 in the main system and I'm looking over quest 10 because I think we're going to give it a go Sunday maybe. I'm really excited for this quest, mostly because it's so different from all the rest. :) It's a nice change of pace. Anyway, I just wanted to get some clarification on the quest's mechanism. Here's what it says:
As soon as a Hero moves through any door, he must stop immediately and roll two red dice. He will then be teleported to the square with the same number as the dice total. If that square is already occupied, he will land on the Hero or monster in the square. The landed-on Hero or monster will lose 1 Body point, and, if still alive, must roll two red dice to see where he/it is teleported. If the same square number is rolled, roll again. The first teleported Hero remains on the square. Heroes may only pass through one door per turn!

Ok, so after rereading that I think I've answered my question, but I'll ask it anyway. Do you all roll the red dice to get to the doors in each room and then roll again to determine where you're teleported, or do you just roll once and that one roll (of two red dice) gets you to the room's door and determines where you are teleported? According to the rules, it sounds like each character has to roll twice, but that seems like a heck of a lot of rolling. I'd like to do it where only one roll is necessary, even though I don't have a really good reason, except that Dave tends to roll on the board and knock all the carefully placed furniture, doors, monsters and tiles out of place. I really oughtta get a box top or something to roll in. hmm....what was my point? Oh yeah. What do you guys do? ... ... I suppose if someone is wearing the plate armor, they really need to roll again with two dice when they pass through a door to determine the teleportation... *sigh* I guess I answered my question.

Well, this one is a better question. :) The Ring of Return. The card says:
When invoked, this magical ring will return all Heroes that the ring wearer can "see" to the starting point of the Quest. It can only be used once.
I need clarification on the last line. Does it mean the ring is used only once per quest and you still get to keep the card, or once and only once and then you lose it? Again, now that I've reread it, it seems more likely that it's once per quest but you still get to keep the artifact. I think I got confused because I've been reading more about the expansion packs and the artifacts in those quests like the Spell Scrolls and Magical Daggers that are lost after use, so I thought it was the same with other artifacts from the main quest, but probably not. I'm probably making this more complicated than it is.

I've always had my Heroes make a separate roll for travelling between the doors. I suppose it doesn't truly matter and you can always do what you believe to be best for your players.

The Ring of Return is a one time use Artifact. Once used, it's gone forever. Any artifact that can be reused usually states once per quest or something along those lines. If you feel it may be of need later on for some of your players, you can always add another as a special treasure to any quest. You're the boss!

 Really?! Only one time ever, huh? Alrighty then, thanks for the clarification. :)

I am in 100% agreement with drathe. On both points. That's how I've always interpreted it.

So... how did the quest go?

Well, I don't think Dave liked the castle format as much as I thought he would. :( He got some unlucky rolls and his barbarian died. He still wasn't eager to search each room for treasure, well, until the end I guess, after one of the heroes made it back to the stairs with the Ollar's gold, and the other heroes were just teleporting around to rooms they'd already been to, trying to get themselves back. As for the dice rolling and the Ring of Return: rolling the dice twice (once for movement, once for teleportation) worked just fine. And the RoR didn't come into play, although Dave did understand that he could use it as a last resort if he ever got trapped in a room with a lot of monsters and just a few body points.

On an unrelated note: I'm trying to work out a way to play the quests by myself. It's a tad tricky, but it's coming together. :)

I'm intrigued. Too bad about the Castle of Mystery not going as well as hoped. :( Maybe the Witch Lord quests will excite him more.

Possibly. But it doesn't seem like story interests him. He just likes beating up the monsters. *shrugs* Problem is, it's not very fun for me to try to beat up on him. I'm just too nice. ;)

Now about playing HQ by myself: I know people have come up with ways to roll the dice and randomly generate rooms and traps and events and such, but I would really like to play the official quests. But how do you play when you have to look at the quest booklet whenever you enter a room to fill it up, but you see the rest of the dungeon. :( So I first tried to make 2 square by 3 square hole in a piece of paper (since that's the smallest room size) and just move it around the map in my quest booklet. Yet, if you're not extremely careful, you'll still see some of the other rooms, and you'll get to see trapped squares and secret doors and such. *hits brick wall*

So, I said to myself, 'self, you need to make up your own map pages, one for what you see when you open the door, one for when you search for traps, one for treasures, one for secret doors.' I thought HeroScribe could help me there, but I had trouble downloading it :( so I'm just doing it on Excel now, and I used the Excel quest generator thingy in the Inn. Then, I thought I could take a few blank map pages and cut out, say, all the blue rooms on one page, and all the green rooms on another...but I ran into a similar problem of accidentally seeing other rooms instead of just the one I wanted. So, what I really needed was 22 blank map pages and cut out 1 room per page. I'll probably need 6 blank map pages for corridors too, or I could cut out a 1 by 3 square section and just move it along a corridor.

The next problem, though, is moving around a room or corridor before I've searched for traps and I accidentally step on one, how will I know if there's no Zargon to tell me? I've pretty much trained myself to always search for traps before moving around a room or corridor, but I think I'm going to put any trapped squares that are right after a door on the main map board, because there's no way to search for those traps anyway.

It's not foolproof at all. But it does give me the fun of moving pieces around the board, rolling dice and shuffling cards. *shrugs* Who knows? It might work.

Have you thought of letting your hubby be Zargon? That way you get to play the Heroes and he gets a different perspective. You never know, he may prefer to be Zargon...

Yeah, I have. But he doesn't always have a lot of free time to play. ... I don't want to knock him, it's great that he plays the game with me at all, I just don't know if he'd pay attention to all the details and rules and such. ... I'll give it another shot, it's probably way simpler than what I'm trying to do. *shrugs*
