Two weapon fighting

Postby Neuralstasis » July 26th, 2023, 11:55 pm

Getting in to AHQ again after a mere 30+ year break. Have been running a my own modified version of Enhanced Advanced Heroquest for some friends and family for a few sessions so far. Lots of questions and issues with the rules, so I'll start with this one.

So, loads of GW miniatures have characters and monsters using two weapons, but AHQ does not seem to have any rules covering using two weapons. There are a few examples of monsters having just a flat two attacks, and the berserker ability giving an extra attack.

So a house rule is in order of course. How about:

A model may wield more than one single-handed weapons in combat, one per arm on the model. Each weapon will allow the model to make a single attack roll per weapon wielded and roll the corresponding damage dice for that weapon. However, due to the difficulty of wielding two or more weapons at the same time, a model will suffer a -2 to it's Weapon Skill for all it's attack rolls and also when being attacked by other models.

This may be combined with the berserker ability to add an additional attack roll (controlling player chooses which weapon this attack is made with), but the model will suffer a total of -2 to their Weapon Skill when attacking and -4 to their Weapon Skill when being attacked by other models.

I tried to phrase this to be simple and also cover the possibility of model with more than two arms (skaven and chaos models) wielding more than two weapons.

What do you reckon, is -2 to WS not enough, just right or too much. Any other rules people play to cover two weapons?

Welcome back!

You're right, though except for the Elf Wardancer and the Chaos Lord, I don't see any other character or monster with two weapons in AHQ, TitD, or WD.

-2 WS seems fair when using two weapons. I think it could work. An ability that cancels the penalty could be included too.

What about models with the Berserker and the Two Attacks abilities that wield two weapons? would they be allowed to make more than three attacks per turn?

Yes, true that the mini's made for Heroquest do not have a lot of two-weapon models, I'm talking about Games Worskshop minis in general. My situation is that I recently acquired an old box of AHQ from a friend which was complete, except it had ZERO miniatures. So I have been populating the whole games (heroes and monsters) with old minis that I already had (or borrowed) from fantasy battle plus a few non-GW figures. There are quite a number of them which have two weapons.

My idea of the situation is that two weapons would be good for taking on loads of weak monsters, because the WS penalty wouldn't make it too dangerous. But 1vs1 a enemy of similar skill, it would be better to take a sword + shield so you dont stuffer the WS penalty and be unable to hit your opponent. Statistically I dont exactly know how this stacks up though... :D

As written I hoped that it would be understood that a Berserker would make 1 extra attack, so wielding two weapons they would get 3 attacks total and suffer -2 WS on attack and -4 WS on defence. Technically if you had a model with 3 weapons (Deathmaster Snikch  ) and they were berserk, then they would get 4 attacks.
