Custom Made Dice Rules.

Postby Calmethar » July 7th, 2023, 5:55 am

Hello all |_P

I'm fairly new to Ye Olde Inn and to going more in-depth with HeroQuest. As most here, I've played HQ since I was a kid, though. And now I'm playing it again with my own kids :D
We've bought the new edition as well with all its expansions. Mostly to have the expansions, but also as we're from Europe and wanted the American version with monsters with more than just one hp ;)

I came across Slev's Revised Edition (v2) here on the board, which is a magnificent piece of work (kudos Slev :D) – and which makes use of the custom made (German) dice sets, which I really, really like, to spice up the combat after the initial quest-books :)

Hence the title of this post and why I'd like to ask if anyone knows other fan-made rule-sets which makes use of these dice ? Or any other custom dice for that matter ? :)

I'm guessing that the German guy who made them must also have some sort of rule-set with them as a part ?

On top of that, I noticed that there's also a newer version of them with slight changes (to the orange and purple die), and was also wondering where those fit into any rule-set ?

Aye, a lot of questions about rule-sets and dice, I know :)

I'll post pictures in the post below of the first and second version of them for comparison for anyone interested.

Kind regards,

One could e.g. also make use of Descent (1st Ed.) dice, which really have a lot of customisation options. Or even better, make HQ inspired versions of them with the possibility of more than just one or two of the same symbol on each die (as seen on the image here below) :)

Strictly speaking this isn't a custom dice idea, more of a custom use of existing dice but...

Super HeroQuest Rule:
:skull: = white skull, lose 1BP unless blocked by shield
:blackshield: = black skull, as white skull + activates push back
:whiteshield: = shield, blocks a skull

Also you don't need to turn to the North American edition for monster with more than 1 Body point, Second Edition has some already (see far below) and the 1989 suggestion below:

Games International Magazine # 9 , September 1989 wrote:Increase the ‘hit points’ of orcs, fimirs, zombies, and all ‘one off’ monsters by one hit point. Increase the hit points of chaos warriors and the dreaded gargoyle by two.

This amendment gives the Morcar player a chance once the adventurers have obtained some equipment - the barbarian with chainmail, helmet, shield and battle axe, is truly a ferocious sight to behold

Games International No.9 Sept/Oct 1989

Additional Material:

From Kellar’s Keep: Grin’s Crag (The Guardian of Grin’s Crag) wrote:The Guardian of Grin’s Crag has 3 Body Points. Keep track of the Gargoyle’s Body points on a character sheet.

From Against the Ogre Horde (Ogres in general, Tograk - Ogre Chieftain (4BP), Ogre Lord (5BP), Gargoyle (3BP), Festral – Chaos Sorcerer (3BP) wrote:
Certain personality monsters such as an Ogre Lord or an Orc Warlord might have a personal set of extra Body points which will be specified in the individual Quest. These monsters will each have their own special Body point track which will appear next to their characteristics in the Quest notes. When a personality monster loses Body points, the lost Body points are recorded against their own personal Body point track and not the Ogre Body point track.

#From Wizards of Morcar
The four sorcerers have 4 or 5 BP* and use a tracker in the Quest book which most people would not want to use as they don't want to write on the Quest book and it would effect replayability if they did.

*Note: In Wizards of Morcar: The Final Conflict, all four sorcerers appear again listed with “the same characteristics as detailed in the previous Quests” but are shown with only 4 Body points.
:skull: = one hit
:blackshield: = one hit & pushback
:whiteshield: = cancels one hit

Thank you very much for all that input, Bareheaded Warrior, and some very nice work you've done there as well :)
