[The Four Horseman] Quest Pack Idea

Postby Thor-in » February 19th, 2019, 3:30 pm

Okay I have an idea for a new quest pack, well packs I should say (maybe depending on story line and layout).

I want to implement The Four Horseman of The Apocalypse. However I don't want to call them that because of the whole religious aspect of things. I got this idea about two or three years ago when I was watching the TV show Sleepy Hollow and started working on it, quest icons, quest ideas, new floor tiles, miniatures that could be used, quest pack tiles, everything. Unfortunately I don't know if I have any of it saved on my personal computer, I was doing most of the work on this project at my previous jobs laptop. I believe I made two copies of everything but I haven't been on my personal computer in about 6 months and before that about a year, and never opened my 32 +/- gigabyte file on HQ (I think I might have a problem). So I'll power up Frankenstein's monster today (I built this computer from taking about 5 or 6 different computers and putting them together) double check that and see what I still have.

A few Inn user here that I know personally named BraveSirRobin (my uncle), Valeer86 (my friend) and I have already started working on this project again. I'm looking for any other Inn members that would like to give ideas, thoughts, help map making, anything they might see fit to help. I would like to be able to make this as NA and EU versions. However to start with I'm thinking just working on the NA version and then converting everything to EU (and possibly other languages if it's popular enough).

Alright, so, here we go....

This is what BraveSirRobin has come up with at the moment with a few ideas.

Idea # 1

- Rather then the Four Horseman, perhaps make them Zargon's/Morcar's children.
- Maybe make quest 1 an adventure to defeat Zargon/Morcar, and all subsequent quests his children's revenge on the heroes.

Zargon/Morcar children ideas/special abilities. I'm thinking one Quest Pack per Zargon/Morcar child.

- War - Load the board with all creatures (like and open battlefield) Like Or'c and Zombies at war with one another. Then maybe have a time limit that the heroes have to get through the quest before they are noticed and attacked.
(Maybe the board should only have Chaos Warriors, Doom Guards, and Gargoyles, War type monsters)
- Famine - Limit healing spells/potions or take them away.
(Not sure what kind of monster should be in this idea)
- Plague - No enemies. Many traps, all the traps, so many traps. Some hidden and poisonous. Then a few more traps. When you think you've placed too many traps....Place some more.
(Maybe have the whole quest pack Rats, Zombies, Ghouls, Plague type monsters)
- Death - Normal Dungeon. Give Death a special attack (roll a shield or die, once per battle).
(Clearly we need Skeletons, Death Reapers, and other Death type monsters)

Story Line so far...

QUEST #1 IDEA

Message from Mentor

The time has come, Zargon/Morcar is cornered and held up in a mountain cave (maybe this should be a second fortress). However he has all of his remaining forces with him. Gather your strength heroes and press this advantage. Allow no retreat, allow no escape, end the scourge once and for all!

Map not drawn up yet.

End of Quest # 1 "(scene)"

Zargon/Morcar let's out a bone chilling scream. Then sits on his throne and offers you a sly smile.

"You win heroes" he sneers
"However, you will find your victory to be quite hollow. You see I have four heirs and you shell be their test. To see which one shall take my place as Lord of this World"

With a wicked laugh Zargon/Morcar passes and the south wall of the cave collapses revealing a crooked and decrepit castle!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUEST # 2 IDEA

Message from Mentor

You enter the crumbling castle to see a very ornate entrance hall. Monsters of all like's line the room. Four thrones stand in the center of the room.
Four masked beings inhabit the thrones. The left most stands and approaches.
In a voice not quite human or monster, it shrieks (edited this for appropriate content).
"You now stand in the court of the condemned! You shall chose your own fate and then kneel before it, or be consumed by it!"

Map not drawn up yet.

- Note -

The thrones from left to right.

Death>>>Famine>>>War>>>Plague

The heroes should blindly choose which to face.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEARLY THIS WHOLE THING NEEDS WORK. I know that, so any input as for story line, how many quests there should be, how many quest pack to the whole project, quest pack themes, renaming the Four Horseman, so on an so forth.

As I'm writing this it sounds like I'm trying to remake the Wizards of Morcar :? .

Now I do understand that some members are involved in the HQ25 project, but again any input any member wants to give you be great.

Hey Thor-in! Best of luck on this project.

In my opinion having more quests is always a good thing, and I hope you get the support you need... but as seen by the 25th anniversary project, trying to coordinate a bunch of strangers on the internet isn't easy.

Thank you and trust me I already know that this will be a long shot. But unless you ask, you will never know if anyone has any input that would be useful.

I like those ideas - but - YOU CANT KILL MORCAR THOUGH!!!!!!!!!! :p
my slant on it would be to have Morcars top 4 lieutenants vying to be named morcars heir, so theyre coming after the heroes and whoever kills them gets the prize. this explains why they're split up and the heroes can deal with them 1 at a time.
I like your ideas for the horsemen, but i think from a game point of view you should look at what effects and mechanics you want each horseman to use. purely from a game mechanics point of view i think famine and plague will overlap too much, so i would merge them together and introduce a different horseman. my four horsemen would be Death, War, Pestilence and Fear.

Death - hes summoning and resurrecting undead minions, buffing them and using them as a shield. you're going to have to fight through a lot of minions to get to him. death has a huge army of undead that hes building, get to him and stop him before his horde is vast enough to cover the horizon

War- with war you can go two ways, either load the board with creatures (but thats mechanically what you're doing with Death) or you make him a hulking behemoth and the heroes are in for the fight of their lives. war can dish out solid damage, keep fighting for days and needs a ton of skulls rolled at him in order to get scratched. imagine a boss fight so epic its split over 2 or 3 quests. war doesn't hide or stand behind pawns, hes big and bold and hes charging at the heroes from the very first turn. maybe his quest pack is chasing the heroes while they run for better ground or special weapons to level the playing field.

Pestilence - not many enemies and all of those are disease carriers (skaven would be good), lots of traps and patches of floor you cant stand in, diseases are debuffers and DOTs hes weakening and slowing the heroes from afar, affecting their dice rolls, reducing the effect of healing. Pestilence has taken over the sewers of a major town or city and hes spreading a plague that will kill thousands if the heroes dont stop him, hes lured them in and hes ready for them.

Fear - hes lured the heroes into a trap and ambushed them, now hes playing mind games. whats real and whats not? mechanically hes denying them actions, hes splitting them up, tricking them, they're too scared to fight, too scared to move, sometimes they're so scared they're literally running away, maybe even attacking their friends just to get past them. crowd control, fear effects, illusions - fear will never fight all 4 heroes at the same time, each turn there will always be 1 or 2 of them hes got locked down.

Wasn't fully my idea, but I can understand your stance on that matter. :p :D

As for you idea about making a new horseman named Fear is a great idea I think. Have a lot of the rooms that the heroes go through have a mist or limited light, so the LoS is reduced. Maybe having them roll a Fear check every turn to see what if anything they can do.

War is a great idea also. As I was reading your response, it was making me think of a Maze type quest that yes the heroes are the ones being hunted instead.

i wouldn't have a fear roll every turn, I've played games with that mechanic and its tends to get a bit tedious, but certainly have it as an option especially when fighting Fear directly. i find that mechanic has more dramatic effect when you're toe to toe with a big bad bogeyman than just walking into a random room.

are you planning on 1 quest per horseman (ala wizards of morcar) or something more? id lean more towards giving each horseman a three or four quest arc. one thing i wouldnt do is have all four come back for the final quest. it really devalues them - how tough can they be individually when the heroes can beat all 4 together? :p

I'm with Tott. I'm very against killing Morcar. Otherwise, sound interesting.

May I suggest changing them a bit from the Four Horseman to avatars or representatives of the 4 Chaos gods?

The 4 Gods of Chaos.

And... Morcar can never die. You might slay what embodies him but his spirit will continue through who ever attempts to seek such power.

I was planning on having ONE BIG QUEST pack with four multi quest packs inside it, probably around 12 - 16 in total. The name (not that it's relevant yet) I had in mind for the project was Awaking Chaos. I found the cover page I came up with for it and I'll post it later.

Yes, I'll take that suggestion because I want to get away from the religious aspect of the whole thing for obvious reasons.

Again (and I'll probably say it one or two more times :) ) that wasn't my idea, it was pitched to me.

Now with looking at The 4 Gods of Chaos idea (if Spookyhappyfun will let me use that) I'm thinking of changing the name a little.

Maybe....

Needs to be tweaked and a picture added, but that what I'm thinking for a cover page.
