I have a standing bribe with my players of free experience points for painted mini's. (amount of points depends on the power level of the campaign I am running) Points may be added to 1 character of choice for each mini painted. Now I know HQ doesn't have experience points, but if you have a table top role play group you Game Master for perhaps you could leverage some players to get to painting.
It was watching my sweetie paint mini's for exp that got me started in painting. She was doing it well enough, but if she was painting the mini's, they were painted with color schemes she preferred. So I started painting them also so some came out looking like what I wanted. Mainly I just do a paint in the lines and then wash them kinda thing with minimal shading and color layering as I am not good at that. I am not very good at intense detail, but the mini's look better than they do out of the box.

Harsh! I got burgled once but a time of poverty, living in a bed sit, all I had was clothes and my rave vinyl, luckily they took my clothes.

They took a lot more than the games. The worst bit was, they loaded up my car with the stuff they nicked and pinched that as well.

Remnants from the manufacturing process, mostly a thin irregularity where the two molds meet during casting.
In HQ figures, it's... prominent, to say the least.

It wasn't untill looking at pictures around here that i started worrying about flash myself... I guess i'll be removing more flash from now on.

Having a designated play area is not always viable, as a miniature wargamer at heart I know this only too well. However, there are some solutions. Have you tried taking a picture of the board before you pack up? For Warhammer we had to put measuring tapes in between units to be able to set them up relatively (Since it would never be perfect, but close enough to keep playing), but you wouldn't need to worry about that part for Heroquest! A top down shot and you could set that back up again in minutes.

Another option is having the quest book in a clear plastic sheet and black out the areas they haven't reached with a wax pencil when you have to pack up.

Hope it works for ya :D

I did have a go at painting some Warhammer 40k Figures when I was a teen. They didn't come out well so I would rather have unpainted figures than botched paint job figures.

Still got the raised eyebrow...

Welcome to the Inn by the way |_P

Good call with the excuse. My nipper likes playing HQ with me. The problem we have is a lack of time on my part. We don't have a place where we can sit down and play without being in someone else's way. So leaving the board out mid quest so we can pick up when we are both free can be a pain.
