What does Zargon / Morcar and Mentor look like?

Postby Grossey » Tuesday June 16th, 2015 2:35pm

The question could also be... Who is the evil wizard looking fellow on the game screen with the monster rogue gallery below him?

Based on the Heroquest comic book, the wizard dressed in red is Mentor and the Skeletor guy is Zargon / Morcar. Is the comic considered HQ cannon?

It seems that most people assume that the wizard with his super tome dispelling monsters below his billowing cape must be Zargon / Morcar. Who is in the authority to say for sure who this guy is? Based on the piece of game screen artwork alone, it appears that red wizard is the puppet master controlling the waves of chaos he summoned. Could it be that the commissioned artist of the game screen used the Mentor design to create a menacing looking "master." Or, was the red wizard originally Zargon / Morcar, but changed in the comic because of the similarities to "Dungeon Master" on the D&D cartoon show?

There is a lot of misinformation on the interwebs about who Zargon / Morcar is, and what he looks like.

Help!!!

It seems like this debate comes up frequently in our gaming circles.

That's our discussion.
To make it short, Mentor and Morcar are one and the same person, and I'm right. Have fun! |_P

We all ready figured that out.

:P

Zargon looks like ME. It is obvious...every time that game comes out I play the EWP and others are heroes. It is obvious, I am Zargon and Mentor, therefor both wizards are the same person!

So if Zargon is Mentor, does that mean he's playing both the Empire and the Chaos alliance for fools by pitting them against each other in a war of his own making?

I think the dude is dealing with a split personality with severe compartmentalization of identities.

Of course it is all idle chit chat, but it is a fun concept.

I can picture an end game where the Wizard discovers the truth of Mentor when he peeks into Loretome. Mentor/Zargon is so shattered that the passages of Loretome covering his eventual demise are unknowable to him as it would require him to deal with the split personality. But they are obvious to the Wizard when he glances at Loretome.
Which of course requires the Heroes to go on one last series of adventures where they face as enemies, the Empire, the Dwarven Lords, the Elvin conclaves, and the Apprentices of the Arch Mage leading up to the point where they must slay the old mage with some relic/s they had to recover in a prior dungeon to do the task.

The Barbarian becomes the new Emperor, the Wizard becomes the new head mage, the Dwarf returns to his people a king and the same with the Elf.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Playing both sides would be one way to ensure actual chaos.

@Cyn: After defeating the empire, dwarves, elves, etc. and killing Mentor, the heroes realize they had been deceived by the actual EWP.

But then the Wizard reads too far into Loretome, becomes the new Mentor/Zargon and the cycle continues...

of course....
unless the wizard is wise and disposes of the dreaded tome instead of continuing to read
