Taking up HeroQuest as a hobby. Building my own set

Hello HeroQuest fans,

I've been a fan of HQ since I was very young and have great memories of playing it with friends for hours on end. The game just amazed me! I loved all the pieces, quests etc.

Over the years I've been a big MMO players through a few PC titles and have recently being thinking about taking up a new hobby and would like to get back into HeroQuest in my "mature" years. Now I made a list of the contents from the base game (and expansions) which I plan to focus on building first. However, I'm looking for some advice. I'm on quite a strict budget and can't afford to buy loads of pieces at once. I'm guessing Ebay is the best place to look? I'm in the UK so I'm trying to keep P&P low or even free. Should I start with the board or just buy pieces as I spot them? I'd maybe also like to get into painting my own pieces, but I have no knowledge of doing this.

Any adivce or feedback would be great!

For some of the more rare pieces, it can be cheaper to proxy or print & play (as appropreate).

ebay is a brilliant source of pieces. painted figures can be strippped by soaking them in detol, and badly painted minis are usually vey cheap.

For what it's worth, I managed to make a full Print & play set of game boards and ALL the overlays for less than £50 in total. A full set of proxy minis generally comes out less tahn buying one or two of the rare expansions.

I'm just looking on Ebay now and adding some bits and pieces to a collection I've created. So many nice pieces on there! It looks like the only thing I might get stuck on is an empty game box. I guess its quite rare to find one.

Also, the contents list mentions a cardboard tile sheet? Is that like the doors etc that slot into a base? Its been so long that I can't remember!

Dude, make your own wooden treasure chest box for HQ. Don't waste money on the cardboard box. Do a search on this forum

Doors (to go in stands), secet doors, blocked space/falling block markers, cardboard bots of teh furniture, EWP screen, etc.

Just a quick plug that my HQ wb site, in addition to my updted version of teh rules, quests, cards, etc, has P&P files for the game boards & overlays
Thay're for 40mm board spaces, buy you can easily shrink them back...

In the US the eBay trend is clear. A 100% base system is much cheaper than buying even just 25% of the parts separately. I would start with this, then look into piecing together the expansions from printed materials and proxy figures.

Ah okay I see! Well I just bought three Orc pieces from Ebay for £1. I though that was a bargain!
