For heroes, I try to use something that is at least somewhat close to that hero.

For everything else - especially house-made monsters - I use whatever I can get my hands on.

That's just me...I'm not real picky.

I used to use a mixture of old GW models, the odd HQ model, and a few more recent GW LOTR models. Since I got my order from Reaper, I've now got a ton more to choose from and in more realistic sizes (no skeletons bigger than regular humans, for example). The Reaper bones models are so cheap and come in small enough quantities that you could get a full dungeon for the same cost as a single GW plastic boxset of anything. Plus they are incredibly easy to convert, so you don't end up with all the same model. On the bad side, the mould lines are tough to remove because the material is so flexible.

You get a ton of minis that match style with the battle masters game but they are very low quality plastic. Won't it be cheaper just to buy a complete game off eBay than getting nickeled and dimed on minis here and there.

I just want the style of figures to match. I dont really care which way they match. If I bought all Bones figures that would be cool. Bu tI want them to be able to fit the squares of the map.

I have been using models from many different companies, mostly Reaper, Hasslefree, Perry, GW, Grenadier & a Scibor dwarf, which is in fact just as tall as humans...
So far the non-HQ models have all been put on a square citadel base (GW), but i would have prefered to put them on actual HQ bases, i am hoping Zealot minis will start selling those again.

I'm very partial to the older Citadel/GW (and offshoots like Marauder and Iron Claw) miniatures from the 80's and 90's.
To each his own, but a lot of modern minis with dynamic posing and all that leave me cold.

I also have the odd Ral Partha and a few Foundry minis- as long as it has that "old school" look I'll use it.

Not even among Reaper's lines do styles match. Not even scales match.

I would quote this further and further to make a joke about the left and right sides of the left and right sides respectively, but Alas! 'Tis not funny! 'Tis the truth about Reaper.

I was going to mention this too. In particular the buildings are useful for when the party stumbles upon the ruins of the recently sacked village plot hook leading to tracking down ________ Chaos/Goblin/Orc Warboss.
