I think that it is really a snotling... In fact the image is more bigger (there are some skaven, zombies, dark elves...etc)... The drawing is excerpt from the warhammer roleplaying book first edition and has not been originaly made for heroquest but for warhammer... That's why we can see a not included snotling...

Alas, the mystery is solved. Personally, I'm glad HeroQuest does not include snotlings.

And how do you go lower than goblins anyway? Zero defense dice? Any skull is an automatic hit?!?

That's a good question. I guess when fighting a snotling a character could automatically be boosted by one attack die, and one defend die, but what would the point be? Unless your dungeon is absolutely packed to the walls with snotlings there would be no challenge for later characters, and advanced players would quickly tire of that anyhow.
Sure it's pretty scary when the witch lord returns but what you should really be afraid of is "Resurrection of the Witch Lord". Resurrected baddies always come back more threatening than ever, usually kind of demonic with wings and horns and hell fire to announce their arrival. Think Gannondorf or Mother Brain from Super Metroid.

Snotling base: 2 squares big, 3AD, 2DD, 3 BP, 1 MP, 8 MOV
May attack every adjacent square, dividing the AD on two or three opponents;
After losing a BP, the AD are reduced by one, until nothing's left;
Remains of two or three "injured" snotling bases may scatter to join each other and comprise a "complete" snotling base again.

Whipped that up while typing it.

Casts a Genie spell...

Of all the monsters, only the Dragon Ogre (or is it called something else?) didn't see action as a plastic figure in a GW or MB boardgame of the 90s. A similar, but more classical Centaur was originally included in the unreleased Wizard Expansion Pack, however (later is was rejected). Of course, the Goblin, Orc, Fimir, Skeleton, Zombie, and Chaos Warrior are part of the Hero Quest Main System, while the Ogre and Elven Warrior made it into the EQP. For other games, the Skaven made it into Advanced Hero Quest, while the Skeleton and Zombie made it into it's expansion, Terror in the Dark; the Snotling, Orc, Goblin, and Skaven made it into Warhammer Quest, while the Skeleton, Zombie, and Orc made it into Catacombs of Terror and Lair of the Orc Lord expansions (all the monsters made it into the monster tables, though); finally, the Beastman, Orc, Goblin, Chaos Warrior, and Ogre made it into Battle Masters (actually uses a play mat, not a board).

As for Snotlings found in Warhammer Quest, they went down with one hit but had the gang-up ability. Any available Snotlings would first surround one hero before surrounding another hero, until all Snotlings were placed on the board. All Snotlings attacking one hero would then combine their attack dice for one throw as they swarmed around their victim. That's potentially 8 attack dice in Hero Quest!

This was counter-balanced with the deathblow manuever (a basic ability granted to all heroes), which had the potential to wipe out all adjacent snotlings in a single, arcing attack. (They generally moved around a hero to be attacked by the hero before they could attack.) All you had to do was keep hitting, then rinse and repeat. It was actually quite satisfying to hew the threat down before you in one turn...NEXT!
