HeroQuest Miniature Scans for 3D Printing

Hey everyone,
I have been away from the Inn for a bit. It gets a bit frantic trying to run things at Zealot. Admin, accounts, sending invoices, organizing the operations, bossing the guys around. To be honest, feeling a bit like I'm going to burn out at this rate. I kind of needed to come back here and remind myself why I actually enjoy models and making miniatures again. So I'll have one single room please, with a window.

Anyway, first little Inn related project is 3D scanning. We bought a silly expensive 3D scanning gear for miniatures, I might as well put it to work on the good stuff: Rare HQ miniatures for people who want to 3D print their own copies.
One of you guys (I have to check my inbox here for who it was to return these to) kindly loaned me some HQ rare minis a while back, so at last I'm going to go through and scan them for you all

I know some other places online have Heroquest photogrammetry model scans of varying quality already, but these ones are structured light accurate to 12 microns - and Heroquest deserves the best so that's what it gets from me .

It takes about 3 hours to scan a model and get it cleaned up ready to be printable. The HQ models are very soft with details, the scan has picked up everything, mouldlines and all. But at 10 inches tall on your screen it looks a bit softer than reality.
I will work through these gradually if there is interest. First one is:

Thantos, I don't know squat about 3D printing, and I'm not sure what to do with a zbrush obj file yet, but I've saved this to a folder with your name on it for the sake of credit.

I'm kinda trying to put together a * of HeroQuest archive. No intention to undercut Hasbro. (I keep saying: I'll buy whatever Hasbro puts out and two copies of the GS actually if they'll sell them to me, and I encourage others to do likewise despite the stupid orc bard!) Every intention of screwing over eBay scalpers starting to ask $400-600 for a copy of the game!

We can actually produce comparable or higher quality components than came in the box in 1991-94 for everything except the minis. I'd been trying to pick out the best quality scans/recreations I could of those … but if you're up for scanning them to that level of detail, I'm pretty much [!]…

Thanks! The best scan I've seen of the Necromancer.
I wanty to ask, is it normal the render creates small "mountains" in some of the the conjunctions? I guess the original models don't have them.
I also noticed this happened with some original 3d sculpts I did with a friend, when we do the rendering in ZBrush the program creates this little "mountains" but in the main project they are not present.

I have a couple of ogres, can do them in pieces. Ill get onto those too

Ahh yea, in that area that would be where the software did some repair to the mesh, the area under his robe was a bit occluded. If you are getting it on sculpts, it might be the dynamesh function not giving you a clean mesh. I would advise using Zremesher to get better topology during the last detailing stages of the sculpt It will give cleaner sharper edges.

I'm operating under the assumption that if Hasbro starts seeing dollar signs from this remake effort and not just a few hundred dedicated fans, their legal team might at some point start deciding they care about stuff like all the content on the Inn. That'd be dumb, though, because the effort required to make or buy stuff for the original decades-old game is gonna cost significantly more (in terms of time if not money) than buying the new product, for any new product they release.

In the case of the minis … probably all rights to those reverted to GW by now and Avalon Hill isn't just changing the minis for the sake of changing the minis. For now they seem to actively not care when it comes to oldhammer minis, but they've been more aggressive about the kind of stuff we have here at the Inn. If you posted all the bits of any edition of Space Hulk and they learned of it, some strongly worded letters would be written at the least.

As for the new game … I'll be collecting files for it, but not distributing them in a torrent or anything, at least not while the game is in print. I'm disrespecting decades-old Copyrights on things the owner won't (or can't) sell me, not their ownership of the franchise. There's a difference.

About time i get onto scanning some new ones! The scanning graphics PC at work died and I had to return it on warranty, get it repaired. But back up an running now so I'll see about loading in some more classic HQ goodness
