Quest 2 and Quest 7 rewards...

Postby wallydubbs » October 25th, 2018, 1:32 pm

In Quest 2 The Rescue of Sir Ragnar the Emperor rewards the heroes with 240 gold to be divided among them if Sir Ragnar is brought back alive.
Quest 7 The Lost Wizard, the Emperor awards them with 100 gold apiece (up to 400) for a wizard that may or may not be alive.

Does this seem a little unbalanced to anybody? I have no problem with a wizard being worth more then a knight; the problem is a dead (or undead) wizard is worth more regardless. Though my crew only received 300 gold (because the dwarf died) I still find an unfair balance.
It also reads "Find out what happened to Wardoz", this kinda implies that he won't be found alive (Not in the traditional sense anyway)... maybe it should be reworded to add some mystique regarding his state of life... maybe a different reward: 200 gold if dead, 400 if alive.

Some brainstorms:

The greater reward reflects the importance of the Wardoz's position as personal wizard to the Emperor. Perhaps this position cannot be filled until his fate is known due to some obscure tradition or whatever. The Emperor might then have a greater need to replace him and thus value speeding the process with a suitable reward.

Or maybe the Emperor knew the fresh Hero recruits had to accept any reward for Sir Ragnar as they had little experience. (Rubes!) Maybe the Emperor offers less reward for Sir Ragnar so the price of ransoming nobles won't be inflated.

Maybe the emperor wasn't so keen on Ragnar. Had that nagging doubt as to his veracity....Meh, would it be so bad if he didn't come back alive?

Quest 7 is an overall harder quest, so estimating it will be tougher and offering a greater reward seems fair, even setting aside any of the above concerns or speculation.

If the reward for Wardoz would be significantly less than for Sir Ragnar, I'd have expected the order of the quests to be reversed (which you're free to do of course when it's your turn at GM).
