A few questions on Orc's Bane

Postby wallydubbs » October 24th, 2018, 11:33 am

Does Orc's Bane only let you attack the same Orc twice?

For instance: if the Dwarf wielding Orc's Bane is caught between 2 orcs, can he attack one, then the other?

What if he's caught between an orc and a goblin, can he attack the goblin and then attack twice if the 2nd attack is against the orc?

Suppose he's in a room full of orcs, can he attack-move-attack again?

I don't suppose Heroic Brew will let him attack a 3rd or 4th time?

This one has been controversial at best and as such, opinions vary greatly.

Some say you may attack up to two Greenskins (i.e. also Goblins!) or just Orcs, adjacent to the Hero wielding it. Or to attack one of those twice, during which the enemy can only roll for defense once. As for movement between attacks, that's also a topic of discussion; some allow it, some don't.

Two attacks against the same or different orcs.
Another monster cannot be one of the two attacks, so no orc and goblin.
both attacks before or after moving.

I understand some Zargons on here allow Orc's Bane to extend its double attack range to Goblins and not just orcs. Would you apply this to Ice Gremlins too?

Orcs only, 2 different Orcs and split move as it's pretty weak overall (not official but doesn't specifically exclude/define it so don't mind).

So a weapon called Orc's Bane on the card, that specifically says two attacks v Orcs? If an EW is going to allow it two attacks against non orcs then you might as well allow the Wizard to wear Borin's Armour even though specifically it say it may not be used by a wizard. I am all for flexibility in EW interpretations, but this is too far for me personally.

Orcs Bane is a little weak for a weapon that gets discovered so far into the adventure, and there’s a fair chance a Hero won’t even choose to use it. Because of that, I allow the best possible interpretation of the weapon; it can attack twice against the same orc or goblin, or one attack against two different green-skins. The name of the Blade is more poetic to me than it is literal, and it is mortal to orc-kind rather than just orcs. I like to think that a Hero would choose to bring it into the caverns beneath Kellar’s Keep.

I wouldn’t think that anyone would choose to use it as late into the story as the Frozen Horror, but if they did, I might allow it against Ice Gremlins simply because my proxy miniatures for that monster look quite a lot like goblins.

Thank you, that's what I mean. Some players choose Orc to mean Orc-kind, as the greenskins (except for the Fimir) seem to be related on the Evolutionary Tree.

I know what you both mean, I just don't agree. But certainly Greenskins isn't a ridiculous stretch.

I know Orc's Bane does seem a little weak, but 2x2 attack dice is often enough to kill two Orcs, whereas a Battleaxe will only ever get one. Also in our games it is in the Barbarian's possession who has long since trained up his weapon skill to +1 att die so that he can use 2x3 attacks for an even better chance of that double kill.

Do you find that the Barbarian even gets to attack two different orcs very often though? It’s not a diagonal attack weapon so the Hero would have to be directly adjacent to two different orcs. It probably won’t happen as much as him getting to use both attacks on the same target.

I always think of the sword Sting from LOTRs when I see Orcs Bane. Sting is said to glow in the presence of Orcs, but in truth it does the same with goblins too.
