I remember those old quests.
No ... one body point was enough !
How hell can you tell this... yep I know.
The 14 basic quests were easy and the poor master didn't get chaos spells for the fimirs or chaos sorceers too.
Even the bosses got one body point !
But with Karak Varn (kellar keep) the missions were dangerous with more traps & monsters.
It was hard for the heroes, same when they had to attack return of the with lord.
Impossible with the sorceers of morcar (yep this time they had 4 body points each but the magic traps were too powerful)
You also forget that we only had with the french edition only 5 artefacts cards in total not really helpful.
Even the speel cards of the wizard & elf had bad translation and less power... I think about the card courage or rock skin...
So if HASBRO releases one day the gameboard again, I will contact them immediately to change everything.

Sounds quite tough! Are the editions similar in other aspects or are there more differences in rules/quests?

The basics are the same, but there are some distinct differences.

    The North American version has:
  • More Body Points for Monsters
  • Morcar is renamed Zargon
  • There is an Armoury instead of Equipment Cards and some of the items are different
  • 10 Artifacts (Quest Treasures)
  • Chaos Spells (Spells for Zargon to use)
  • The treasure deck has a couple different cards, one more Potion of Healing and an additional Wandering Monster
  • The Stone Hunters Quest was renamed The Lost Wizard
  • Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord has an Alchemist's Shop
  • KK & WL have 10 Artifacts (introducing Spell Scrolls)
  • There is no shortcut in Kellar's Keep
  • There are some other variations here and there before getting into the exclusive expansions as well.

Thanks for clarifying reply! It seems that the US edition has much more content and depth in playing. Lucky bastards. :) In addition, the Finnish edition is so full of mistakes! For example, the Fireball spell card has the same description as the Courage spell. That was quite confusing back then. :D And the translation is also so poor, full of mistakes and bad grammar.

Yeah, there have been several poor translations in other editions. In the Spanish edition, one of the treasure cards states to mark the amount of gold found on your Character Sheet, but it doesn't say how much gold was actually found. In the French Return of the Witch Lord, the final Quest layout was messed up making it impossible to complete. There were also some clarifications made from the first English edition (the one with the Maze being the first Quest to their second edition (the one where The Trial replaced The Maze). The rule book was rewritten and some card text was changed, and some equipment cards changed. Some rules were further clarified in the North American edition.

How are the Chaos spells used? In which situations is Morcar/Zargon able to use them? I've been playing now with couple of friends and we have found this easiness of killing monsters quite annoying. Should make some modifications to the rules.. I thought that maybe the US body points for the monsters would make the difference.

The reality is, is that this game was meant for 8-14 year olds. It wasn't designed to be overly complex, it was slated for the Heroes to win, from the get-go. In it's original european version, it has been classified (many times) as a "Treasure Seeking" game; the monsters are just there to slow down the process. The US edition takes the difficulty level up a notch by making it (slightly) harder to kill the monsters; however, it is still pretty easy. There are several 'house-rules' sets out there that really make the game more complex and increases its difficulty level, although I have always preferred staying within the original spirit of the game; treasure seeking- with monsters & traps thrown in.

Don't get me wrong, I've played several pen & paper RPGs that take difficulty & complexity to a whole new level. They were fun, but it seemed that more attention was paid to 'the rules' than the actual fun of playing an RPG. That's what I enjoy most about HeroQuest; its simplicity!!

In the North American edition, several Boss Monsters are allowed to use certain Chaos Spells. All spells they may cast are listed in the Quest Notes along with their stats. Once in a while throughout the expansions, a few regular Monsters will have the ability to cast a particular Chaos Spell or two as well.

Don't forget, you can always throw in a Monster of your own that can cast a Chaos Spell. Make one Orc in small band a Shaman and allow them to cast Ball of Flame or Summon Orcs.
