Custom Modular Board

Postby chaoticprime » February 18th, 2013, 6:45 pm

UPDATE 5/1/13

Okay, so I actually built the board awhile ago, out of resin bricks. I then decided to modify it to make the rooms interchangeable. As I had only attached the bricks to the base, and done a quick n' dirty paint up, it was not that big of a deal.

Here it is with some of its naughty bits showing.

Here is the only room-tile that is finished and painted.

I plan to make every single possible room (hence the modular design). The only optional piece I have started on, however, is Grin's Crag, as shown in the below three pictures.

The tiles are very nice, but promise me you won't make as huge gaps as they did in those pictures! Is it like 3 mm between each tile?!

Looking forward to the pics :)

Those are some excessively wide gaps--I agree. Do you have any good resources for doors?

Why not just use the HQ doors?
If you are going to sculpt doors from plaster or resin I predict them falling easily over. You'd have to invent a system to attach the doors to the board.
Or have you already considered this?

I had thought to fit the bottom of the doors with thin and durable plastic that would slide between the tiles.

As the board is modular, you can just place the door between the rooms, or even make one-square door tiles.
On the the HQ-cooperation site (where you got the moulds), they also show their "enhanced" fixed HQ board here, including their way to put in the doors.
Have a look ;)

I have often thought about using 1-tile-doors when daydreaming of 3D boards. The problem as I see it, is that it jacks up the line of sight and fighting through doorways rules.
Haven't we all tried putting the barbarian in front of a door with the dwarf and wizard armed with spear and staff on each side of him? Stuff like this gets a little wonky with 1-tile-doors. (in my opinion)

That's because then you can put additional walls wherever you want and to keep it all in a grid, else it would be very distorted.
The walls at 3mm are as thin as possible, methinks.

That makes kinda sense. But if I were to make a board like that I'd rather "just" cut a little of the tiles where there were supposed to be walls. Kinda like on the actual board where the walls just overlap the tiles.

Instead of a modular board, I think I am going to make a full board--the larger spaces were really the incentive, not modularity.
