New/Sub Miniatures

Today I bought a D&D Deathknell Booster Pack for the heck of it (which comes with 8 random miniatures), and based purely on what I've seen from the D&D miniature site, I was hopeful. I'm actually impressed. As far as all the miniatures go that are out there and available, these are some of the best subs or new miniatures to bring into the world of HQ. Yes, the one "downside" I suppose is that they are pre-painted, and only, as mentioned earlier, is because the HQ miniatures are not. (The only reason I would call it a downside is because I niether have the patience to paint miniatures nor have the urge to do as such.) However, personal preference, I don't really care if I have painted and non-painted miniatures inhabiting the same board, so whatever.

I also got some Reaper miniatures for real cheap too. They are also pre-painted, about the same quality as the D&D ones and a decent size matchup to both the D&D miniatures as well as the HQ ones.

Well, it looks like I've got some new monsters I've got to draw up stats for....

I'm thinking about getting some of these minis too. I think most of them are about the same size as HQ minis, but dragons and giants are huge. I guess my goal would be to eventually phase out the HQ minis with D&D minis. I never really cared for the look of the Heroes. Especially the barbarian. The monsters look cool, but it would bug me to mix painted and non painted.

The one thing I hate about the D&D minis is like most everything from WotC, they're in booster packs so you don't know what you are getting. Guess I'll have to use eBay.

yea, it is a little funky using a mixed painted/non-painted selection of minis, but for the moment, i'll work with it. i guess if i actually painted my minis (which i won't - for multiple reasons) it's be fine, but still. i too have thought about eventually phasing out the hq minis and just using the d&d ones. to me, it's even stranger using a wide variety on minis and i want to get to the point where i'm using a single brand, yet have a wide selection of monsters. i'd love to stick with the hq minis, but for me, it's even harder not owning the Elf or Barbarian packs or even AtOH (so many nice hq mini originals that i'm missing). plus, i always wished hq had made booster packs of their own. ah well....

yea, the booster pack thing is annoying in that you have no idea what yr getting and that they don't have bulk selections of certain minis, but i have to say, if their is any pro side to it, it is that i've gotten some monsters that i probably would not have even had the slightest thought about using. i haven't come across dragons or some of the larger figures yet, so i don't know how big those are, but everything else is perfect size and i even have a couple 2x2 monsters that i'm using.

Yeah, I won't be painting mine either. I was also thinking of phasing out my original HeroQuest stuff. I mean a little at a time. Cept the furniture. This game is becoming valuable now, so one reason would be to preserve it. I was thinking of making copies of all the stuff. The cards I can print on card stock. As for the board, I was thinking of making a modular board, like the advanced version (which I haven't played). The board can be made by printing out sections on card stock paper and gluing them to foam board. As for the minis, theres D&D.

LOL Check this out.

I was at a gaming store the other day and I saw a d&D set that came with drizzt (who looks badass), 2 other minis, and a HUGE dragon. I found a pic of it. Here. Look at the comparison of the minis to the dragon...

Now most dragons are not this big. They're dragons and giants that are big, but not like this one. I'm thinking bout getting one, but if I ever use it, The heroes would need an army with them. It would take some doing to figure out how to write up body points and the amount of attack dice used for the dragon.

Attack: 15 Combat dice
Defend: 20 Combat Dice
Body Points: 30
Mind Points: 20

Special: Can cast all Chaos Spells; has a breath weapon that inflicts 25 Combat Dice of damage to each Hero...

Holy CRAP!! I wouldn't want to F*** with this thing! & I'm freakin' Zargon!!!!

Hmm, I would give the dragon separate BP and Attack for it's different body parts as if they were separate weapons/monsters. Then the Heroes could concentrate on an arm and prevent the dragon from being able to attack with both arms and head in one turn, bringing him down a notch and slowly making him easier to fight.

That's how I would create an overly huge beast. Either way, bring lots of potions!

Yes, this is also a common idea used in some rpg's or even video game rpg's - the concept that gargantuan creatures have set hp for specific body parts (arms, head, body etc (if necessary)). Either way, it's gonna be one hell of a fight. However, i'd be curious to see how such a concept can work into the world of hq - although i don's certainly need to worry about it now, especially since i can't even imagine that thing fitting properly into the hq gameworld. what is that, like 5x5? It would need a complete custom game map or modular system to hold it properly - or maybe some of shirtz' outdoor tiles with the cave entrance attached (outdoor mountain battle for the ages!!)

drathe. That’s a GREAT idea! It’s like games Mage Knights and Heroclix. Mage Knights had dragons with more than one dial, and Heroclix has Galactus who has 4 dials.

I’m thinking this is doable, but it would be one of those quests that you can only do after you have good gear. I was thinking what you could do is first, make a “boss monster” (using a smaller dragon figure perhaps) that pretty much takes all 4 heroes to kill. This would take some research, along with trail and error. Maybe he can have 2 attacks with 6 or 7 attack dice. He could have something like 6 or 7 defense dice, and maybe 12 – 14 body points. That’s just off the top of my head. Like I said, we would have to test it and make sure he’s tough, yet beatable by all 4 heroes working together.

Now back to the HUGE dragon above. Once we figure out good stats for the “boss monster” from the paragraph above, we can multiply that by 4. It would be as if you were fighting 4 boss monsters, but instead, you will be fighting one huge dragon which you would have to attack from 4 sides.

Now I know what you might be thinking. All 4 heroes can’t kill this thing. Well an idea I had for that is create a quest or scenario where you have a king that seeks your 4 famous heroes out. He wants you to lead 4 groups of his finest soldiers to kill this dragon that has been terrorizing his people, or land. You could give the soldiers beginner hero stats, with half the body points, or you could make the soldiers equal the strength of an orc or a fimir.

Now when it comes time for the battle, you have 4 heroes, with 4 groups of soldiers, fighting a dragon that has 4 sides. You could have each hero leading 1 group of soldiers to attack the dragon on one of his sides.

The groups lead by the barbarian and the dwarf could have a spell caster with one deck of spell cards to use. Of course the dragon would probably have to have some spells of his own.

Anyway, this is just me brainstorming with not much to do at work.

by the way, yes, this would be on a custom board.
