Warhammer Quest is a Bad Game

Warhammer Quest is pretty much a video game that requires the player to do the work of the game engine. The turn-based, initiative-determined combat is incredibly dull. Its like playing a console RPG that has no battle animations, music or sound effects and the only unpredictability comes from when a known- threat may or may not happen.

I haven't used the Role-Playing rules, but I have read through the book. The concept is interesting--its like D&D but the only thing there is to do is kill *lemony goodness* in a dungeon. There is keen potential for making series' of thematic quests, but with all that verisimilitude it would be easier to play HeroQuest.

I guess that now I see why its popular to play it alone.

The presentation of the game is quite nice--superb, actually. It probably would have been more wise to produce something less extravagant to curtail the MSRP. I do not know how much the price was when it was released, but its current selling price makes it less appealing than buying a copy of Diablo I and playing it with the sound muted.

That's one hell of an analogy.

Mmm I'll give you that; in saying I have used it to begin a campaign as we follow a young Knight growing up while he quests :

The Castle Cellar Caper - The young children foil foul thieves!

The Wines of Ghalon, a Errant Quest

Using the RPG element and a more focussed and themed dungeon zoo, you can have some fun quests.

And still advanced heroquest is better and more flexible :D...
But i'm agree that your approach , Seb, is the best for this kind of game.

Wow Seb, I love how you 'shop your pictures to add more atmosphere!
And finally I get to read more about Jean. I loved that cellar caper adventure.

Do you have the quest notes for these? I remember downloading your Cellar tiles and character cards, but I'm not sure if I have the quest notes.
And this second one is new to me.

Thanks Sjeng, I'll have a look in my art files for notes on the priest etc :)

As for Advanced Heroquest, time to acquire a copy and read through the rules. Should be interesting to see how it holds up judging the opinions expressed :)

Oh! Is this like the 12 days of Christmas where CP hates a game every day?

I think the main selling point of WHQ was that it could be played without a DM. The monsters have pretty specific rules for how they move and attack.
But I fully agree on the analogy that it feels like a video game where you have to do the computer's calculations yourself.
Like so many other I bought it for the parts - no intention of ever playing it.

I think I paid DKK 500 -600 way back. That equals ~£ 50-60.

I'm not down with many traditions, holiday ones in particular--I'm just bellicose. Who the kcuf does an advent calender, anyway?
