It think it helps when making new heroes to have them specialized in one weapon instead of struggling to come up with wild abilities that a lot of us can't agree on or is simply to difficult for a younger player to understand. Also the Spear is not an impressive weapon in my opinion.
So let's try this...
Hobbit = Sling 2 Attack x two shots.
Thief = Dagger 2 Attack x two shots. With option to poison.
Monk = Spear 3 Attack, 2 Attack two square reach.
Hobbit special ability = Brace Spear
He may enter a room, fire one Sling shot, then "Brace Spear" as enemy approaches & Hobbit attacks with 3 Attack with the Spear. The monster quickly defends before making his own attack, and then combat resumes as normal. This is a one time thing with this enemy.
Its a tiny ability I'm giving my warrior Hobbit in addition to his 2 Attack Sling since my Hobbit doesn't have great defense. He probably won't have more than 4 Def.
So I guess I'm making two statements:
#1 If you give a new hero an advantage with one type of weapon, it will help you avoid having to create a bunch of crazy, odd abilities for that hero that a lot of us won't agree with.
#2 The Spear is really a useless weapon in the game since it requires two hands and if thrown becomes lost, damaged or the battle is over by the time your able to reach it.
Even if you gave it a 3 Attack, its still less useful than the LSword & Shield lol...even if it was throw able at 3 Attack.
I'm obviously giving the Monk a 3 Attack Spear adjacent/ diagonal since he's more fitting to have the Spear/ Halberd as his main weapon. The Hobbit gets the Sling.
