Hero Quest Cluedo / Clue

Postby Kurgan » October 30th, 2020, 4:24 am

Inspired by the elusive "Hero Quest Monopoly"... remember Cluedo? (It was always "Clue" to me, in the US), well here's another attempt at a bizarre mutation of two classic games!

Gather the clues and try to find out "Whodunnit" in this murder mystery game... now set in highly adventurous world of magic.

Anyway, you could use the HeroQuest board for this (or the Clue board dressed up with Hero Quest assets, your choice).

The Victim: Mr. Mentor

The Suspects:

Lord Eric the Red = a Barbarian (or Dwarf) OR the Red Wizard
etc. a RED figure

Lt. Greunak = An Orc (or Goblin)
etc. a GREEN figure

Col. Ramses = A Mummy OR Capt. Rhodes (Zombie)
etc. a YELLOW/WHITE figure

Princess Peacock = a female Elf (or Barbarian)
etc. a BLUE figure

Dr. Doom = A Chaos Warrior (or Chaos Warlock)
etc. a GRAY figure

Master Midnight = High Mage/Storm Master/etc. OR Chief Blueblood (Ogre)
etc. a DARK BLUE figure

OR

Sir/Lady Amethyst = (any of the "Dragon Strike" Heroes, which are purple)
etc. a PURPLE figure

OR

Sir Obsidian = a (black) Mercenary
etc. a BLACK figure

The Weapons:

Crossbow
Long sword
Halberd
Sword and shield (or just a shield)
Candlestick
Skull

(you could also substitute a Rat, Scales, the Weapons Rack, or a Treasure Chest! Torture Rack?)

Block off all but 9 of the rooms. Modify as needed (attached image is from the original game).

Some special cards might need to be created for the furniture/weapons, rooms, etc. and the security envelope (big enough to hold the monster or hero card and the others).

That sounds amusing!
Having only vague recollections of playing the original ... this sounds like an opportunity to create a game modification. Hmm.

The board was largely irrelevant and only served to slow down the game. Just take turns making accusations, unless you really liked moving the little players around the board.

Ha!

It's been awhile, but were you even able to make a new accusation before you had visited a room and located a weapon? In a pinch I might agree, could still be fun with word substitutions. ;)

Is Hero Quest Mad Libs next? (based on parchment texts and Intro/Conclusions)

You all laughed at me (and I laughed at myself) but I see Hasbro is selling "Dungeons and Dragons Clue." A real product...

So there you go... swap out the minis and you're ready to go (though a fan-made version that is more HQ accurate would be even better).

Missed opportunity for D&D Clue: they're not using D&D dice!

[There's also a well known LOTR Risk for that other thread]

You get to play as a winged cat or a winged furry elephant. I don't even know what led them to use these, even if they are established characters, it's just weird.

I never adapted the rules of Clue for any other game play - only recently started playing it with my family - but I immediately noticed the similarity of the Clue board and the original HeroQuest board. For me it is a very striking resemblance.

Although the center square in Clue where the file is kept isn't used as a room for player movement, visually the boards resemble each other greatly. I wonder if during the early stages of HeroQuest's development and initial playtesting, Clue boards were actually used - or at least served as inspiration - not too unlike the way molds of Fisher Price Adventure People were used to sculpt the first Kenner Star Wars figure prototypes.

Using a Clue board for HeroQuest would mean less rooms, but wider halls! (it also has a couple of built in passageways which HeroQuest later used in Quest Packs).

Clue, of course, uses the one die roll - which adds to the suspense of trying to race to a faraway room to make the winning accusation.

Another similarity - although the Clue Detective Notebook sheets are a different size and the HeroQuest player sheets - they are both brown ink on white paper.
Quests completed:
Game System: 1,3,5,6,8,10,12,14 (player); 2,4,7,9,11,13 (GM)
Kellar's Keep: 2,4,6,8,10 (player); 1,3,5,7,9 (GM)
Barbarian Quest Pack: 2,3,5,7,9&10 (player); 1,4,6,8 (GM)
Elf Quest Pack: 2,4,6,7 (player); 1,3,5 (GM)

I made a version of clue that turned the story around and all the players were responsible for the murder. Then the players wander around the mansion looking for weapons to use to kill off the other players. The winner would be the sole surviver who would inherit the original victim’s fortune.

I would love to try that if you could write down the rules somewhere...!
