Only full blown wizards, not the casual users of magic, such as the ELF. To a dedicated wizard it would seem as insulting to their power to rely on such primitive things.

Yeah D&D and AD&D were very adamant in the rules no swords or armor for wizards, so it is pretty much a thing at every game table I have been at.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Because D&D wizards are god-like judging by an old computer game I had. They were a lot of fun though.

Seems a bit odd, given that the biggest inspiration for fantasy wizards is Gandalf, who has a pretty big sword.

Using powerful magic drains your energy quickly. He had the magic, but if you can wield a sword with the rest of them...then why not?

If you don't want to change the spirit blade you could add a Wizard Sword to the armoury. Wizard only magical broadsword, 500gp.
