HQ+ Armoury

Postby Gold Bearer » December 25th, 2013, 7:34 pm

I had to make a christmas day post. That's when I got HQ when I was a kid and I think of it every year. I thought it was amazing, so immersive.

Settlements
Between quests you could randomise the type of settlement they encounter. Roll a standard dice and a combat dice. On a skull it's a village, on a white shield it's a town and on a black shield it's a city. On 1-2 it's a human settlement, on 3-4 it's a Human settlement that sells rare equipment if it's a city, on 5 it's a Dwarven settlement and on 6 it's an Elvin settlement. Elvin and Dwarven settlements always sell ordinary equipment, their own types in towns and cities and rare equipment in cities.

Villages - Blacksmith who sells (not buys) basic equipment (one of each). Tavern where you rest enough to recover spells. Healer who you can pay to heal BP. Can hire Scouts.

Towns - Armoury that sells standard equipment (one per card using both types of decks and one of everything else) that will buy non-magical equipment for half its sale value. Inn where you rest enough to recover BP. Witch Doctor who you can pay to heal MP. Can hire Men-At-Arms.

Cities - Magic Shop (Unlimited equipment) that will buy any equipment for half its sale value. Guest House where you rest enough to recover BP and MP. Can buy Advanced equipment. Can hire Battle Wizard and Ogre Mercenaries in Human cities.

Armoury
You can recover your own thrown weapons by moving to or through the square that it hit.

Bows and crossbows need arrows and quarrels or they're far too cheap, or you could just increase their values.

If a character finds themselves without a weapon they can pick up something to use as a club attacking with 1 dice.

You could also allow characters to buy stuff from the treasure deck in magic shops.

* Can be used by the Wizard and Sorcerer.
+ Can be used by the Paladin, the Paladin can use all Basic Equipment and can wear any armour.
/ Can be used to attack diagonally.
# Can be used to attack two straight (not diagonal) squares away if the square between is empty.
- Can be thrown. Breaks on a skull or black shield.
_ Can be thrown. Breaks on a skull.
= Can be thrown without a chance of breaking.
^ Ranged weapon, two handed and cannot be used when adjacent (including diadonally) to an enemy unless stated otherwise.

Any type of bow can be shot twice if the owner doesn't move accept for Elvins who can fire twice in succession and move at half rate. You can't fire a bow twice if you're wearing Heavy Armour. Some characters have their own special rules for bows superseding these ones.

Cloth Armour, Leather Armour, Chainmail and Platemail are Basic Equipment. Suit Of Armour is advanced equipment. The others are Standard Equipment.

That's more weapons than you can shake a stick several sticks at! You've put a lot of thought into this. It would be nice to see you revisit this thread after a period of time to pare it down to a best-of version. I'd say double to triple the current Armory selection should do the trick for the rest of us. If you wanna stay in the HQ rules presentation format, it's a good idea to have the special abilities and limitations listed in the description. Easy to use works well with the masses.

If it's for your use, well then you already like it--no changes needed.

Firing a bow twice is OP for anything over A1--that's two or more Body Points of damage before a monster has a chance to close and attack. Distant monsters are even worse off, particularly if movement is allowed while firing. If you allow a seperate defense for each shot (complication), then A2 double attacks might work. A Hero may only attack once with a crossbow for a reason.

Yep it is a lot of weapons. That's why they're split up into basic, standard and advanced. The idea is only basic equipment is available in villages, basic and standard in towns and everything in cities. That way you can start a campaign around some villages and you don't have to introduce all the new equipment at the same time. That way it's not so overwhelming. I was going to do a trimmed down version anyway because a lot of these weapons are specifically designed with my custom heroes in mind. I'll do a shorter one that can be used with the standard game. I did virtually all of these weapons years ago. I haven't even put the giant weapons :) in yet (for the barbarian and ogres only) because I never did the prices for them and I haven't got round to it.

I thought doing it with a key at the beginning rather than listing all the rules multiple times was a better option because it looked too cluttered before. There's a lot less words no and it looks a lot cleaner. At some point I've love to present everything properly with individual cards, especially my new heroes but I haven't looked in to how to do that yet and presentation has never been my strong point.

Yea it allows two defences. If it has multiple attacks it allows multiple defences, or it would be really OP. Also the ranged weapons are designed to be used with ammo that costs money, or they should be more expensive, although that would OP some of my heroes so ammo would be better. The crossbow's far too cheap and I used that as a precedent.

Elvis can fire twice in quick succession? Someone has been watching 3000 Miles to Graceland! ;)

Seriously, a well put together list. I hope your monsters defend on white shields to stand a chance!

I especially like the odd stuff like stonebread, and mirrors. I always like seeing how others implement non-weapon/armor equipment.

LOL! I didn't notice that. I wonder what special abilities he should have. :)

I was going to increase BPs. Goblin/Skeleton 1BP, Orc/Zombie 2BP, Fimir/Mummy 3BP, Chaos Warrior 4BP, Gargoyle 5BP.

Defending on white shields would be nice because it would add to the consistency.

It all depends on how hard the quests are and how many heroes are being taken really so I think I'll just leave that one open for the players to decide. There's no point in making restricting rules.

gootchute wrote:I especially like the odd stuff like stonebread, and mirrors. I always like seeing how others implement non-weapon/armor equipment.
I got the stone bread from White Dwarf mag article on Warhammer Quest and the mirror from a very old D&D compute game called Curse Of The Azure Bonds (I loved that game). It had flasks of oil as well, forgot about that. I'll have to add that for :mummy: slaying.

I believe the Dwarf Troll Slayer from Warhammer Quest had stonebread as a special healing item. I had an idea from an Elven bread just now:

Elven Waybread: This filling and invigorating pastry can be eaten at any time. It gives the consuming Hero +1 to all of his movement rolls until he/she takes 1 point of body point damage.

Yea he did, to make up somewhat for not being allowed any armour. I made it work for the Gnome as well because I like my items to be usable by at least two of my main heroes and the Gnome's only got 5BP.
