complete rule compendium

Postby Nephew of Mentor » October 24th, 2012, 3:25 pm

One thing I noticed about the expansions for HQ is that they often incorporate something which did not exist(much less have rules) in the original system. This could include opening a heavy door, result of losing all mind points, spells added in WoM, and the hiring of mercenaries. Of course, to make up for this lack, each new quest book has the new rules printed within. I thought it would be nice to have a rule compendium which compiles ALL of the official rules into one book, a sort of compendium with a detailed index. I, personally, would even include things introduced in the magazine quests and whatnot. This could even be an opportunity to improve the description of some unclear rules.

Has this been done? Is anyone interested in helping me compile a list of the things that should be included in this? I figure it should include monster stats and maybe a complete alchemist's shop and equipment shop. What do you guys think?
Sure it's pretty scary when the witch lord returns but what you should really be afraid of is "Resurrection of the Witch Lord". Resurrected baddies always come back more threatening than ever, usually kind of demonic with wings and horns and hell fire to announce their arrival. Think Gannondorf or Mother Brain from Super Metroid.

I've often thought about this too.
The main problem is which rules to actually use.

The North American ones, pretty please, with cherry on top.
I'd be interested to have such a printable file for reference.

I believe Slev at the Old Scratch site has done such work for the core rules and expansions with his Hero Quest Revised. He did make some small modifications, and combined both NA and EU rules if memory serves. He's still reworking things with additional modifications as add-ons.

I might have to check that out. Having that compilation of information available in one handy place would make quest creation easier as well.

Here's a link to his site. He explains things better, but he pretty much uses all published material, including the magazine articles and expansions. Unfortunately, he has the stuff on 4shared network, so you'll have to sign up. Why not bug him to switch to a more user-friendly file-sharing server? If he ever does switch, many poeple will no doubt be grateful.

Wow, I might need to add that stuff to my collection.

But it sounds like you have to rectify some rules that are conflicting? (Certainly with body points).
We never went very far into loss of mind points...

In the end though, everyone is simply going to make their own house rules anyway.

Oh, absolutely, but it would be nice to have the printed rules in one place.

Very true about the houserule thing. I think Slev did a pretty good job, himself. For instance, he uses the European rules book as the basis for his own rules, sticking with most of the original wording and the same format. From there he picks rules from either edition, and adds in some house rules. For instance, he decided to go with North American Body Points for monsters.

I think it would be a good idea to make both an EU compendium and a NA compendium as seperate documents. EU users are going to want what they are familiar with, as are NA users.
