I've recently been playing Heroquest with my young son and wife, and have been adding a lot of homebrew additions and house rules.
One great source of homebrew ideas has been Banjo's House Rules (https://banjogames.wordpress.com/), which in turn inspired me to rework Quest 9 from the core Heroquest (2021) set into something a bit more interesting.
The original Quest 9, called 'Race Against Time', doesn't really involve any real racing against time. With this rework, it does. But rather than just kill off the heroes if they are too slow, the quest isn't over if they run out of time: instead, you get an additional grueling adventure to fight your way through, with a bit of a gold penalty at the end too as the price for taking too long.
I felt the difficulty of this additional content was pitched just right (in combination with my house rules) and it was, in my opinion, the most fun I had with the core quests I played.
It helps if you have the following expansions/homebrew content, but they are not mandatory:
- Return of the Witch Lord (so you have enough Skeleton miniatures)
- The Spirit Queen's Torment (so you have a female Dread Sorcerer miniature)
- Some of Banjo's custom spells and cards (but the rules for these are given in the Quest map itself as well):
