Calculating quest difficulty

Postby Pancho1 » September 8th, 2022, 10:33 pm

Hi everyone! I've been looking at lots of fan made quests and I'm unsure about how to figure out how to place them within my current campaigns. Specifically the single quests - lots look like fun side quests, but I'm not sure how to gauge the difficulty level. No point throwing relatively green Heroes into a high difficulty quest! I've seen some mentions of people calculating "power" - eg. 'TheTrial' is rated as a power of 160. I'd really appreciate any tips! Thanks!

About quests difficulty estimations, maybe you should check the charts uploaded in this thread for inspiration about how difficult are the official quests between them.

Unfortunately the site says that I don't have permission to view the images in that thread.

I've also seen quests rated by dice - as in "this quest needs heroes with at least 3 AT and 4 DF dice" - does anyone know how this process works?

I'm assuming the power rating version is related to the BP of the monsters?

I’m not sure how it works, but a number of people have various methods of determining the difficulty of a quest. The most common thing I’ve seen referenced is the total body point count of monsters, and the total body point damage from traps.
This does not include wandering monsters or hazards from the treasure deck as far as I’m aware. You can use this at least to get a rough idea.

Also be aware of your heroes current capabilities. If a quest has a low body point count, but most of them are chaos warriors, and your heroes have only 2 or 3 defend dice, things will likely not end well. See Quest 2 from Kellar’s Keep for an example. Not a lot of monsters, but lots of traps and a nasty central room full of traps and 4 chaos warriors. Remember in most cases a hero’s turn ends when they trigger a trap.
