So those totals will be a bit different if you're playing strictly by the NA rules with the Japanese system. Still, that's a ton of gold, but it's mainly so that you can gamble to level up your body points!
(and we're assuming you're not throwing in any of the expansion treasure from EQP/BQP or WOM here)
EU Treasure Deck:
Gem! (50 pieces)
Gold! (1 Red Die x10 pieces, so 10-60)
Gold! (10 pieces)
Gold! (20 pieces)
Gold! (25 pieces)
Gold! (25 pieces)
Gold! (50 pieces)
Jewels! (50 pieces)
Treasure Horde! (100 pieces)
Total: 340-390
NA Treasure Deck:
2x Gem! (35 pieces each, 70 total pieces)
2x Gold! (15 pieces each, 30 total pieces)
2x Gold! (25 pieces each, 50 total pieces)
2x Jewels! (50 pieces each, 100 total pieces)
Total (quite a bit less!): 250
...and now from the official set (I can't read Japanese but the numbers don't change):
Japanese Treasure deck:
Gold! (I THINK this is the same as the "10 x 1 red die" so we'll say 10-60 pieces)
Gold! (25 pieces)
Gold! (35 pieces)
Jewels! (80 pieces)
Gem! (50 pieces)
Treasure Horde! (100 pieces)
I double checked the translation of the instructions (rule book) and it says the cards are discarded after they are found until the next quest, so...
Total: 300-350, slightly less than the EU rules
So if using the NA deck, subtract 50-100 gold per quest (700-1,400 less by the end!). But if you're being strict, you should also subtract the monster bounties in this and the EU version (EU version would ADD 40 gold per quest, so 560 more by the end). But then that also means no leveling up, so you get to spend your money on whatever. The EU equipment deck is obviously different than the Japanese Equipment or the NA armory.
Japanese Equipment costs:
Yes, according to the rules, Equipment IS limited to the number of cards, just like the 1st or "premiere" UK edition.
4x Healing Potion (2 BP each; 200 gold each)
2x Helmet (250 gold each)
3x Shield (150 gold each)
Plate Mail (850 gold)
Cloak of Protection (350 gold)
Chainmail (500 gold)
Spear (150 gold)
Hand axe (250 gold)
Staff (100 gold)
Shortsword (250 gold)
Broadsword (500 gold)
Crossbow (350 gold)
Don't forget of course that we have starting weapons that could also be traded or sold back at half price, namely a pair of shortswords and a broadsword.
Compare:
EU Equipment costs:
(yes, you can buy as many multiples of the same item as you can afford!)
Battle axe (400 gold)
Short sword (100 gold)
Broadsword (250 gold)
The Helmet (120 gold)
The Shield (100 gold)
Bracers (200 gold)
Chain mail (450 gold)
Plate armour (850 gold)
Cloak of Protection (350 gold)
Crossbow (350 gold)
Hand Axe (150 gold)
Spear (150 gold)
Staff (100 gold)
Tool kit (250 gold)
As other have pointed out, there's nothing in the official rules about being able to sell equipment back in this version.
compare:
NA Armory costs:
Staff (100 gold)
Dagger (25 gold)
Shortsword (150 gold)
Broadsword (250 gold)
Longsword (350 gold)
Battle Axe (450 gold)
Crossbow (350 gold)
Toolkit (250 gold)
Helmet (125 gold)
Shield (150 gold)
Chainmail (500 gold)
Plate Mail (850 gold)
No limits on number of times you can buy the same item, and of course you can sell back any at half list price.
There's also the fact that in the Japanese rules, if you die (and don't have the Talisman of Lore/Life yet) it takes all your gold to revive you (each Hero can get revived one time this way) in the next Quest. So even without any mercs to hire and no Alchemist shop, there's still opportunities to lose some of that accumulated loot! Keep in mind in the Japanese rules you can't use Potions or Spells to save you from dying (much like the EU version).
And this would be a slight change too, because in the other versions, presumably the surviving Heroes could claim your money and just give it to you when you returned, in this case they have to pay the Temple to get you back!
Edit: Fixed some typos and omissions.
