Leprachauns, Gnomes: Tricksters and Thieves-Friends or Foes?

Okay I was thinking of having some monsters that have a chance of being good or evil, if you trust a monster, such as a gnome or leprachaun who if friendly will help you with magic, spells, items or fighting. If Foes, they may steal an item, cast a chaos spell, attack you or open a room full of monsters amoung other things-such as solving a riddle which may end in your demise or a reward.
Leprachaun could also be friendly spell casters and gnomes annoying enemies.
Any thoughts?

Gnomes. Use gnomes, since they could be good, or bad.
It reminds me of that ice gremlin in the cage in the cage of the barbarian quest pack.

Here lately, I've been playing with the rules of having a gnome as a character - haven't figured out what
would make them special. Mostly - I've given them the same AD, DD, Body, and Mind of a dwarf, but give them
the spell casting like an elf. Not sure what else would make them different though.
As for leprachauns - I've had an idea for them for a while, just haven't typed it up. If an enemy, you fight them as normal,
and yes, they would have spells. However, if you beat them, instead of dying, they give you a treasure and then just disappear.
You know, like the old myth says - catch a leprachaun and they give you a pot of gold.
Now - if you want to answer the question of whether they would be good or evil. That is a role-playing question. In role-playing
terms, many would call the HeroQuest game a dungeon crawl - simply working your way through a dungeon and fighting enemies
with no good encounters to be heard of. That is the difference with Dungeons and Dragons - in D&D, they introduce the idea of
good encounters, where you might not have to fight but instead can talk or reason with the enemy, or it might be a good person
that will help you out in some way.
ON A SEPARATE NOTE
I've also been working on different types of genies for encounters. You know, Efreet (fire genie), djinn(earth genie), marid(water genie),
and so on - if you want to go with the D&D classification of the types. You could go with the ancient religion classificaion and use the
shayṭān, the ghūl, the marīd, the ‘ifrīt, and the jinn. Not sure what I would use yet. Probably the D&D classification, because it uses
the elements.
When fighting genies, if you beat them, they would grant a wish or something, and then disappear, instead of dying.
Just a thought.

I wanted to hatch a plan with our DM: when my necro got powerful enough to take on the rest of our group, I was going to turn on them to take ultimate power all for myself! Since Lichs are pretty much self-centered *Play-Doh Factories* that care nothing for anyone else's life...so long as they get their immortality!
= Voldemort
= Skynet
= the Mummy
~ the borg
= Hans Reinhardt ('the Black Hole)
= Darth VADER!! (you bet it does!)
Sadly, our DM thought that would be not so fun for my team...while I know full well that batards would all target me real fast!

El Flesh, I think that's when you've stepped HeroQuest from a Roll-playing game to a Role-playing game.
...and it's something I'd allow at my table.

I liked the idea of the "give you a pot of gold" idea, hmmm... you could have like special artifacts or liek one use thing, like a Genie in a lamp that gives you one-three wishes. You copuld also just have a randamized (dice-rolling) way where numbers or symbols: Black and white shields, skull for what happens and how they react to you. Any ideas?
El_flesh, what do you mean by those villains in heroquest, I didn't quite catch what you meant.

I meant those cinematic villains are all questing to become Lichs.
Check that list and think about it. Voldemort, in fact, is already a Lich.

oh, okay, well how would that work? I mean like force powers would put a spin to it, along with the harry potter curses, lightsabers and just regular swords. For example Darth vader could shoot force lightning at Voldemort or somethng and he could just magic it away with a spell shield (pretego). That would be interesting, yet bizaree.
I also Kind of like the gnome=hero idea, he could be very inventive and make like inventions, or be able to make up and create new weapons, or something? I don't know, well I could whip something up.
