Hero Scions

Postby chaoticprime » May 6th, 2014, 6:39 am

Here is an optional method to advance heroes' effectiveness through play. The idea is that fulfilling particular requirements will allow you to elect one Hero Scion to change into. Each Scion is based on one of the four basic heroes, and is only accessible to they specifically.

There is no absolute method of gaining advancement, anything can work. The point of this is to suggest, and supply examples, for how to do it.

Here's an example of a Wizard Scion, the Ninja. To qualify for this, let's say that the Wizard-player must have completed no less than three Quests (Champion Status), must have survived an entire Quest without losing any Body Points, and slain a monster with more than 1 Body Point with the dagger--all as the Wizard.

You consider both cards' rules, so you are still a Wizard when applicable, but are also a Ninja. The extra rules for using the shortsword would overrule anything else.

Obviously, this is a Mage + Thief-type Scion. Other ones could be Mage + Barbarian (Shaman), or even Mage + Mage (High Mage). You could actually break down and make Scions for all the Warhammer mages (Bright, Jade, Poop, Cereal).

Cereal Scion sounds so spledidly spectacular!
I like the scion idea. ghan did something very similar (intention-wise) in Champion of the Empire.

What I would fear is all my four heroes going into the (hero x)+Barbarian direction and all of them becoming tanks and killing machines.
but in concept this is still the most attractive Hero Advancement system other than amassing stuff and skills.
I've long been pondering over Change of Hero Class after championing and dungeoneering being a valid advancement rule alternative to what I regularly offer: skills and whores.

I really like the concept of completing "achievements" to unlock the advanced class.
These could be tailored to suit each specific class. It'll be like actual training. I like this method much more than just completing quests or paying gold.

Maybe each class could combine with each other?

Wizard + Elf = Ninja
Wizard + Barbarian = Battle Mage
Wizard + Dwarf = Cleric
Wizard + Wizard = High Mage
Barbarian + Dwarf = Knight
Barbarian + Elf = Samurai
Barbarian + Barbarian = Berserker
Elf + Dwarf = Adventurer
Elf + Elf = Ranger
Dwarf + Dwarf = Slayer

Those are 10 of the 16 starting heroes I offer, basically. Different names, though.
It all comes very naturally and the progression/specializing is smooth.

1...disarm every trap in a single Quest.
2...search the bottoms of five pit traps.
3...lost all 7 body points to traps.

There's also no reason to force logic when making them. Let the cool idea come first, and then the quantification of it later.

I feel like that's how most of the game works.

Neat idea. I may play around with that just a bit.

A thought for players stealing the traps...print off a blank board and cut the individual rooms out...
when a player steals a trap, he/she can use the printed room to draw it out and place the trap.
That way, the evil wizard and other players know everything is fair and honest. When a monster
steps on the trap, the player just shows the printed room to everyone, and all will know that the
trap was, in fact, placed there.

Wait just a goddamn sec...

3...lost all 7 body points to traps.

So the only way to become a saboteur is to FIRST disarm all traps in a quest - THEN search the bottom of 5 pits - AND FINALLY loose all BP to traps - THEN DIE and resurrect in your new form?

How else can you keep playing after loosing all BP? That means you are dead! D-E-D: Dead!
