My custom cards (21HQ)

Postby Planetdune » March 24th, 2022, 7:22 pm

After a lot of Photoshopping, I got this batch of cards ready to send to the print shop. Before I do, I want to share them with you guys for review. These are meant to be used mostly during actual official quests, to expand the game a bit and avoid too much repetition in some areas. I tried to use the same syntax as the original cards. Also tried to keep things balanced in power and cost, but power creep might have occurred, hopefully not. I am no artist, all artwork is from cards uploaded to this forum and some other sources. Some cards (including mechanics) are straight from this forum as well (notably the Rune Priest) but most card mechanics are my own creation. I will try to explain my thoughts here and there as we go along...

1. Treasure
https://ibb.co/6BmPmwW

The magical elixir is just a bland slate. Something I can use in any quest for any reason I feel fit. The potion hazard was my first attempt to bring some meaning to mind points in the base game.

2. Equipment
https://ibb.co/23C8GkS
https://ibb.co/Jqm3mpc
https://ibb.co/XLQsBtF

It was very hard to add meaningful armor and weapons without going overpowered. You only have 1 to 2 defense to work with for armor and well, they are of course both done ingame. The dragonscale is basically Scale Armor but with movement bonus (usually +2 unless the hero may roll another amount of dice for some reason). The flail is a small bit more expensive than the Shortsword but gives +1 combat dice vs undead (because of its bone crushing nature).

The leather armor set was a really tough one to balance. I really liked the concept of a set. In this case I looked at the picture I had and figured this could be both 1 dice for the leather armor and 1 for the bracer. The set + shield + helmet = 4 without movement penalty for a total cost of 1275g. The plate + shield + helmet costs 1125g. You are basically paying 125g for not having the movement penalty.

The reinforced dagger is just a dagger you may throw three times instead of once with a little reduction in price (over 3 separate daggers).

The sling is a budget friendly crossbow.... maybe 200 is too much for 1 dice (compared to 350 crossbow for 3) ?

The summon skeletons spell is another attempt to make mind points more interesting. Once bought by a spell caster, it is permanently added to his spell book (so stays between quests). Wanted to give the wizard something more to shoot for...

The whip introduces a new mechanic that allows the hero to attack monsters x squares away instead of either adjacent or ranged. 3 squares felt okay to me (for realism). Also added the bonus that you may climb out of a shallow pit immediately instead of having to wait one turn (acts as a rope). Not sure on the balance of this one..

3. Heroes
https://ibb.co/jrpqXVd
https://ibb.co/gJN3syz

Most of my new heroes are based on heroes other people created. I did tweak them here and there. For example, I gave the Assassin +3 on the red die roll and 3 daggers to start with (1 to fight and 2 to throw).

Gave the paladin a -2 on movement, this is thinking about it (while writing this, an error).. I will remove the penalty. The reason behind this was that paladins usually wear heavy armor weighing them down. But this doesn't gel with the fact that plate already comes with a -2.. that would make -4 and wouldn't make any sense.. I did give them a +1 attack vs undead as I feel that fits the lore of the holy knight.

4. Spell
https://ibb.co/gPMkbYJ
https://ibb.co/L5fjK2N

The divine spells are straight from the source, didn't tinker with these except some wording changes. The runes (for the Rune Priest) I changed a little more but kept the original spirit.

5. Condition
https://ibb.co/41ZWjYY

This was an idea of mine to add condition cards.. I was thinking of things like "poisoned", "starving", "disorientated", "paralyzed".. pretty much anything that alters the stats or mechanics of a hero. These could be the result of actions or for example room or even board wide. I didn't find artwork for my other ideas so for now only have one, mind cloud. Once more mind points come into play as the clearer the mind, the more it can resist the cloud (or at least that's my thinking here).

6. NPC
https://ibb.co/jW4xd6k
https://ibb.co/PQX8Dmg

Cards for the npc's from the original quest. The artwork was taken from Odanan who did something similar. I changed the layout by using the hero style of cards for the npc's instead of regular cards (like treasure or spells etc).

And that's it :) I have so many more ideas but for a first batch I thought this would do. I will probably make another batch once I find more suitable artwork. Please let me know if I missed the mark somewhere or something is over/underpowered.. costs too much (or too little)... or any suggestions you might have. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for sharing! My Paladin starts with armor but also gets a bonus (+1 squares of movement while wearing plate armor, +2 squares movement when he's ranked up after completing 10 quests). Hasbro went even further, making their Knight have no movement penalty with plate!

Yea, I have removed the paladin penalty :) Didn't even know there was an official paladin? I take in one of the expansions not yet released for 2021.

The official Paladin is found in the relatively obscure (today) video game "Hero Quest II: Legacy of Sorasil" which was released on the Amiga computer and Amiga CD-32 console in 1994. It was I think the last official HeroQuest branded product released prior to the remake. Fans here have been working for years in adapting elements from the games into board game formats.

My Paladin is loosely based upon the one in the video game, so not saying my interpretations are official! (others have done Paladins too, search them up). Clerics (magical priests, monks) and Paladins (magical knights) are all over fantasy, but many remember them from being popularized by Dungeons & Dragons.

I started him with chainmail but gave him a bonus when he wears plate armor, but the official knight gets a much bigger bonus (no movement penalty at all!).

Really nice work! The Card backs are in a pretty good quality, did you do the naming of the back of your cards (NPC f.e.) yourself or are there any templates for it?

Is there an idiots guide way to separate the images for the equipment so that they're all individual images that I can save?
