It's a Treasure AND a Hazard: Dazzling Gemstone

Postby GimmeYerGold » December 2nd, 2015, 11:14 am

I wanted to introduce "cursed treasure" that had very simple rules, something that went in line with the vanilla HQ flavor. In the UK treasure deck, there is a "roll 1d6 x 10 gold coin" treasure card that forces you to miss your next turn. This is a good concept, the Hero is so busy gathering coins they lose track of time. However, I noticed my players often forget, (and I forget to remind them) to actually miss their next turn, because the card is simply titled "Gold!" and blends in with the rest of the mundane gold coin treasure cards.

So, I thought of something that had a more of a cursed identity. However instead of "tricking" the player after they touch an treasure, it could actually be worth something, but cause a hinderance. So, if perhaps they were close to the end, they might manage it, but if it's early on, they'd have to choose if it was worth holding onto this treasure or leaving it behind.

So here is the Dazzling Gemstone, (with art from the D&D module, Tomb of Horrors!):

Here it is greed itself that curses the Hero! (Almost like the splendor of the Arkenstone in the Hobbit) I didn't want to assign a crazy value of gold to it, (as there is a possible exploit that a clever player could think of to minimize the "curse" of this object that I haven't considered yet), but enough value that it would raise a considerable eyebrow, and act as a reminder for the player that they must adhere to the rule of the card so long as they choose to keep the treasure!

Ouau....
missing every second turn is hard! :) After the final fight, in the "we search the rest for treasure" phase, they would likely keep it. But before? No way! To be tested!

Cool artwork that is, makes me want to search for more! Is that card actually included in your 225 edition?

Another take on the cursed treasure could be that they have found a gem the monsters have been hunting (or one that they covet) and as such they have a risk of running into wandering monsters without searching for treasure.

Ha! surely players will find a way to exploit this card in some way or another!

I am cursed with forever revising, :geek: so this treasure card is an addition to my 225 edition, not currently part of the batch! (I'm expanding the treasure deck from 40 to 50, lone monster/parley deck from 18 to 24, Artifact deck from 20 to 24, and tightening up some mechanics in the 18 card (soon to be 24 card) Evil Wizard/Encounter deck, 24 card Realm/Exploration/Pick-a-card-between-quests-if-you-wish-deck, and the 10 hero cards/abilities)

Since moving from equipment cards to an equipment menu, NA style, I can still keep the total number of cards at or under 225!

I've found a lot of the old school black and white D&D art lends itself well for HQ card art.

Sweet card! I like it allot. Now make a sheet of new cards with this one in it so we are driven to download and print! :D

{Love the Tomb of Horrors so much I have converted it for play to a few other game systems over the years. Nasty place with the highest hero body count of any dungeon I have run with more than one game crew. Only 2 of 6 parties have survived the Lich.}

If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I really like the idea behind this card but it does feel like a missed opportunity to use Mind points.

I was right there with you, Road Warrior--was having trouble fitting all that on the card though!

Anything that gives a treasure advantage to the brainy wizard is welcome, as they almost always get the shaft when it comes to searching for treasure!

Edit: A version for Mind Points

That version is wicked mean.
Call the first one Dazzling Gemstone. Call the second one the Greater Dazzling Gemstone and double the value.
other ideas for names of cursed or enchanted gems
Arcane Gemstone
Crystalized Mythril
Gemstone of Induced Ignorance
Gemstone of Unbearable Beauty
Elder Stones
Death Gem
God Stone
Diabolical Diamond
Adamantite Crystal
Gemstone of the Undying
Jewel of Healing
Dwarf Stone
Jewel of Chaos

Are you going to allow a player to stash it hidden in a room so that they can complete the quest, or force them to abandon it? Seems like there is no way the player will survive without enough protection from the other players, and then they'd take forever to do anything useful.
