Skill Cards Set 1

Postby torilen » November 22nd, 2013, 10:44 am

EDIT: Sorry to the person who has downloaded these already. I forgot to add Some Gary Chalk art on the card backs.
That problem is fixed.

I have bee quite inspired by our good friend Gimmeyergold. So, I've started making some skill cards of my own.
I am basing these on a few things - a lot will be based on my Expanded Characters, found here:
viewtopic.php?f=143&t=1159&start=10

By making skill cards, it will allow people to make "expanded characters" without adding to the rules of the game,
and without having to write anything down on a character sheet. It seems many folks here at the Inn have issues
with exactly those two situations, and so I'm trying to turn my ideas into a more accessible, user-friendly system.

The pdf below will include the following, just to give some examples:
Skill: Great Magic Skill
Use: Magical Heroes
Once per quest, the hero can cast one additional spell during a turn. This card can be stacked with other Great Magic Skill cards.

Skill: Lasting Spell
Use: Magical Heroes
Once per quest, the hero can cast any spell that has a time limit or duration and cause that spell to last one turn longer than stated in its description. This card can be stacked with other Lasting Spell cards.

Skill: Aggressive Attack
Use: Combat Heroes
Once per quest, the hero split his movement to allow movement before, after, or between attacks.

Skill: Continued Attack
Use: Combat Heroes
Once per quest, the hero can continue an attack. If the hero kills a target and another is adjacent, or otherwise within reach, the hero may make a second "free" attack against this second target.

Here is the full pdf. There are 5 General Hero cards, 5 Magical Hero cards, and 6 Combat Hero rules.
Enjoy.

EDIT: 12-23-13 - Posted the revised set 1. They now have levels of skills, so they can get better and more powerful without having to have
a bunch of cards in your hand to "stack" them.

Oh, by the way - and this is mainly to gimmeyergold - While I quite like some of the skill cards
gimmeyergold has posted, I have purposefully not downloaded any of them, so as to make sure
I don't try to "outdo" those cards. I am attempting to make sure these cards are mine, and different
than others posted here (phoenix's imperial academy combat cards, for example).

I wish my card and rule ideas were all mine, but I've been immersed in everybody's HQ ideas for so long that I can't be sure my creations are original anymore--l like to think they are. That's okay, we're all here to support each other's game, anyway. Good ideas should naturally emerge in new forms.

Your Potion Creation skill reminds me of an old thread concerning that topic by a couple of obscure posters.

Actually, I've never seen that potion thread before. I came up with mine while I was working out my
HQ rpg rules. I've had that for a good while now, and as far as I know I came up with it myself.

Pretty basic rules for mixing potions, though - search for ingredients and mix them based on a
potion recipe. The differences in rules would vary in how this is done, and how complex the rules
get.

I know what you mean, though - I have to try to be real careful to make sure anything I post and claim as
my own is, in fact, my own. I will read a lot of other people's threads, but I typically don't make use of a lot
simply for that very reason. I like to come up with my own stuff, and I like it to be all mine.

(though, I have gotten many ideas and twisted them enough to make them my own...waahahaha).

Working on a revision of these cards, as some will need to be changed so that they have an
increasing ability, instead of simply choosing more than one card.

This should cut back on the number of cards sitting in front of any player quite a bit. Hope that will
help some.

Thanks for the kind shoutout, Torilen! I really appreciate it.

Making cards is a lot of fun. I'm digging what you have here! It must be especially great seeing how quickly players take to these new abilities.

Actually, this is the approach I'm working toward, although I recognize how daunting it might be for a player to have so many cards. For instance, if a Wizard already has 9 spell cards, and eventually has 4 skill cards, plus two bonus groups of spells, that's 20 cards to choose from! But maybe that's what you sign up for if you're a wizard??

I'd like to know the average number of turns that a quest could hold per player, based on criteria like number of rooms and number of monsters. Since part of my "leveling up" system is based on using all spells in a group, or using all the skills in your hand, it will become more difficult to gain new skills as your "level" increases, which I guess is the idea.

I'm eager to wrap up my revisions so I can share it--it's also a lot easier to talk about when it's all in one place :)

What we're doing here is one of my favorite things about Hero Quest. It says "system" right on the box, which means it's something to customize, and build on, and it's so sharable. Just really glad this community is so active with people keeping the game so fresh and fun.
