Parrying Cape

Postby Templar » March 27th, 2013, 12:51 pm

I was pondering the possibility of having an cheap defensive item that would serve as a stepping stone to the Cloak of Protection for the wizard. I came up with this...

Note that this item is really just to help the Wizard survive before he can afford the Bracers and eventually the Cloak of protection. Though it might also be useful for a ranged character that is attacked before the switch to a close combat weapon (if you play with such rules, like an action for changing weapons...).

Is this totally unnessecary?

I like the basic idea as a cloak alternative, but maybe it needs to be implemented differently?

I dunno. A Wizard loses all attack dice to get 1 defend die. That's probably a 1 in 2 chance to kill the attacking monster vs. a 1 in 3 chance of blocking a hit from the monster. Rather than leaving the threat standing, I'd try to kill it and block any potential damage from it permanently.

I guess it's intended to be used with spell use. Would a Genie be affected?

The genie would not be affected, no...

I see your point though. I will probably need to change the function alltogether. But the thing is...its a cape. Its not enchanted in any way, so how much can it really cost?? :?
The effect must be on the "Meh" :| side, otherwise the cost will be unreasonably high. I will have to think about it some more.

In the meantime, maybe this would better suit my goal of somewhat protecting the wizard his first few quests:

Put the effect from the shield on the cloak. Unless you him to just wear an extra piece of equipment.

Its is as good an idea as any, and if I can't come up with something workable, this is definitely what I'll do.

New attempt of a special parrying effect that requires access to a paired weapon... (cloak together with a sideweapon was appearently how the cloak was used in duels...)

You could go the same route as Warhammerquest did with the fur cape. Keep it cheap, but it is destroyed if a black shield is rolled. It would add 1 DD until then.

Doesn't your light weapon need an Attack Die value?

I like that! That could totally work
Daedalus wrote:Doesn't your light weapon need an Attack Die value?

Well, no, since it enhances your basic attack, regardless of whitch weapon it is. If you are armed with a hand axe and a light side weapon, you attack with two dice but may reroll any black shields. Exchange the hand axe for a sword, and you attack with three dice with the reroll.

A regular side weapon would allow you to reroll white shields instead...
