Dwarven Forge at it again on kickstarter

I know a number of people have used Dwarven Forge stuff instead of the normal board in order to take hero's quest to another 3D level. Dwarven Forge has really outdone themselves this time around.

That's cool and all, but very expensive to do anything worthwhile.

A 16x2 straight hallway with walls, no corners or doors, is $32 unpainted. The HQ board is roughly 14 times as many parts. Even without the corners, doors, ect. this would be quite the investment.

And after investing all that it's still a one-inch-clusterfuck.
I'm so happy I decided on a 2.5D-dungeon plan that's gonna be cheap, easy, and good looking.

I'll admit, this stuff is pretty cool, would have been awesome to have as a kid and I know I am starting to sound like a cheap negative Nancy in my posts, but I'll take my HQ any day over this.

No, that's me, the cheap negative Nancy. And it's fine.
Somebody's gotta post my opinion here and there...

I'm the one running the numbers here and saying "No". :D

We all love the Hirst Arts 3D board projects and the disappointment comes in comparing this to that. $500 for one of those is probably about right... complete with doors, secret doors, and blocked passageway pieces. If you can mass produced it, this would perhaps be a target price for the hobbyist. Thanos did a study here about what he could charge for just tiles (no walls) and I think the price worked out to ~$100 for a HQ board for what the average board member would be willing to pay.

KK brings up the ever important size point, there will be no placing a gargoyle in a hallway. But even if they were a larger size, there is the zero width HQ walls issue to deal with in the floorplan. If you make a few rooms bigger here and there, this should be able to be made to work. But the drawback relative to the custom boards is that the tiles can be spaced differently to fudge this out.

The advantage here is the interchangability of the parts. But the pieces could end up flying everywhere when you swap a wall for a door, or if you try to deliver the terrain on demand. Playing with a metal board, plastic trays, and magnetized pieces would let you slide them out as one unit. No demo of the magnet pieces was given... and that is a lot of magnets!

For what HQ fans would want this for, it falls short on too many points. I think there is still a lot of room in this space for Thanos to make an impact.

That said, I would happily drive to someone else's house to play a game with this stuff.

Did I miss something or are they wanting almost $4,000 for their newest kit? I've watched 10 of their promotional videos and the prices are nuts for something like table top gaming. I know Warhammer can be expensive, but $4,000 for this stuff is way way out of my finances.

Yes and in their defense, this is enough dungeon to fill your basement. A persistent dungeon is not needed here. You really only need some hallway and enough parts to build a handfull of generic rooms. Waiting for the GM to assemble your most recent room (from the rooms previously visited) can be painful. HQ got this just right.

How much does having a spot in your basement to actually play with this stuff cost? It`s not like you can pack it up take it with you to a gaming location.

It is however cool to know that some people are buying it and maybe there is a complete "Dungeon of Doom" somewhere near you?

Yeah, I looked at this when I was deciding whether not to buy or make dungeon tiles, I went with make my own, because it was much cheaper and more flexible. 3D printing is a lot easier than you think. Thingiverse has a healthy supply of cool table top gaming files. You can make Hero Quest with a little time and effort for under $1000. Plus you can always cast your own with hurst arts molds, still cheaper.

I picked up a few of the encounters (the whole dungeon of doom is 10+ if I recall correctly). It is expensive, but with a few encounters and/or passages packs you can make a really awesome 3d heroquest board with all the bells and whistles for a few hundred. Still pricey, but hey, if it gets used it is worth it.

I for one opted to buy a few sets rather than a video game system for my kids. Now we play heroquest on it and can use it for other games as well and actually talk during gaming as opposed to video games where you aren't making eye contact with each other.

Also, the way I see it, it is just another investment in heroquest like any other. Not much different than say buying the expansions for ludicrous $. Both are awesome to have and pricey and ultimately unnecessary to play the game (since we can play on the good old 2d board and eaually, we can download all the quest packs), but are both a luxury to have.

eventually I will post pics on the message boards.
