This past Friday night marks the first time that EVERY miniature we used was painted!!

It actually did not occur to me until later that this had in fact happened. I have only painted 1 Fimir, 3 Orcs, 3 Goblins, 4 Skeletons, 1 Zombie, 1 Mummy, 3 Chaos Warriors, Gargoyle, Chaos Sorcerer, and the Heroes. It was Quest 13, the Spirit Blade and I purposely prioritized getting the Skeletons done (there are 4 in one room) so that this might happen.

It won't be long before I can implement my objective of only allowing miniatures on the table if they are painted!

What and/or when was your first game where every miniature you used was painted?

How many of you fellow forum members actively paint your minis? Although I have a few small bottles of acryllic paint, I never got into the whole painting thing due to a combination of lack of interest, lack of space and lack of money. Although I own two base sets of Hero Quest figures, not one of them are painted. As it happens, the only painted figures I own are a few Chaos grunts from Warhammer 40K I received as a gift from a friend, and a quintet of BattleMasters Chaos Warriors I gave a very simple paint job to (blue capes and black armor, and that was it).

I don't have painted flying bushes, but good intentions. We'll see if I manage to carve out the painting time from my family.

What and/or when was your first game where every miniature you used was painted?

Some day you will be stripping paint off some of your first mini's as they are not up to standard, selling off mini's so you can justify buying new ones and buying mini's just so you can paint them. There will not be an actual use for the miniature, unless you concoct one but that mini needs YOUR paint.

At 400+ painted miniatures with about 200 unpainted, I still find myself looking for something else in the mini department. Right now I need more rogues, thieves and assassins. Maybe some giants and I'll never turn down a sweet deal on a dragon....

My first game where all the mini's were painted?
Probably about 3 years ago. I only started painting my mini's in the last 4 years. Prior to that it was 30 years of plain pewter on the battle mat. Now a mini does not make it into the DM's war case unless it has paint.
I got started painting because my wife bought a set of WH goblins that came with paints. She painted the mini's and they looked good. The task didn't look difficult and there was allot of paint left over from the goblins. So I started in a few days later. Soon enough you might encounter me at the local hobby shop pursuing the Citadel paint display and considering the merits of paint brushes. {expensive brushes are a waste of money, the cheep ones do the exact same thing as the spendy ones}
One nice thing with painted minis is that when you have multiple copies of the same dude like we do with most the monsters in Hero Quest, if you paint them different colors it is easy to differentiate them at a glance.

I don't have a single painted mini.

I have tons of dungeon furniture - that I paint. I find it kinda cathartic. Love painting the furniture, I can make it look good - to my eyes anyway. Probably not to the skilled painters around here.

I think the deep psychological reason I don't paint the figures but do the furniture is due to how the base game came - from the box. It had furniture that was in color - paper - but still it was colored and looked real nice. All the minis were bare. That has been how I played over the decades. So the thought of monochromatic plastic figs never even hits me as a problem. However, unpainted furniture - that bugs me, because I'm not used to seeing it that way on the board.

Also, the furniture is much easier to paint, all the tiny details on the minis would drive me to homicide at the thought of painting.

I am not a great painter. No where near the quality that some of the guys here have, but my mini's look better than some of the painted rejects I see many people put on the game board...
My approach is to basically 'color in the lines' and then give it a wash. Some of the really fine details on some of the mini's do get lost in the process as I simply do not have those awesome tight skills some of the painters have.

The Hero Quest miniatures do not have that high of a level of details though, so painting them is actually pretty easy. The only one I really hate to paint is the dwarf as he doesn't have enough definition and things kind of run into each other.

When all the mini's are painted on the game board it just makes it all that much tighter and adds to the realism.

My originals aren't painted, except for a few really bad attempts from when I was eight and first got the game, with enamel paints no less >_< But that's why I use so many different substitute minis that I have and they are all painted. I think nostalgia plays a part in why I haven't painted my originals as well.

Agreed that there will always be something new to paint (or re-paint). My painting skills hit a plateau quite quickly and I'm content to continue on the way they look now. The first four minis I painted were replacement heroes then I did some reaper models. I may re-paint all of these at some point, but I'll probably have back-ups before I strip any paint. All of my HQ monsters are as good as I will ever hope to get them myself. So I doubt I will repaint any of those unless the paint actually gets rubbed off.

The real point here for me is to have motivation to paint miniatures. If I can't use it until it's painted, it will get painted. I think I only need to paint the second mummy and Zombie to get through Base System quest 14 with what I have so far!!

Holy cow! That's a lot of painting! I'm not an artistic person, and while I like the thought of painting my minis seems like a good idea, I'm not sure I want to invest the money knowing how well I do in the artsy department. They look grand in my head but I know the end result will be nowhere near that. Plus, I really don't know where I'd find the time right now. I still haven't even been able to finish the archived quests that I started a couple of years ago. The quantity of my minis is balking but it's nowhere near what you have.
